29/10/2007 - The GTROC at the launch of the new GT-R

Five members of the GTROC from Europe met up with some of our friends and members in Japan and had a great time eating, drinking and talking all things club and car related. On 26 October – we set off for the Tokyo Motor Show and, with a little help from Nissan, we managed to get in on VIP day!

Being VIP Day the whole atmosphere is far less frenetic and the chances of getting a decent picture without umpteen people crossing in front of you or stepping into shot just at the wrong time. But by far and away the best bit has to be the opportunity to not only get to see the new GT-R but also sit in it, talk to people who know about it and generally spend a lot of time finding out every detail we can. But, if that wasn’t enough the cut-away really was amazing to see and at last gives a true insight into the cars heart and sole.

There is a good selection of pictures in the gallery.  We hope the photos give you an idea of just how immense this car is and perhaps you will see why perhaps it really is the car we’ve al been waiting for!

Having sat in the car you really get a sense of the car’s potential. The effectiveness of the dash does not come across in the photos but, when you’re nestled tightly into the leather seats hands on wheel, the whole dash conveys a sense of real purpose. Everything you need is directly in front of you and very well displayed. The whole feel is slightly aggressive but not unnecessarily so. The touch screen MFD is totally versatile allowing the driver to configure each screen exactly as he wants.

Everyone at the show was invited to test the car out for size and the reaction was exactly the same. No-one doubted that the car really is something else and, all things being equal, would ideally order one now!  But it’s not just the interior that catches your attention. The VQ38 engine has some very interesting developments and earlier comments that ‘it will be difficult to modify’ may well be true to a point, but I am sure the standard performance is likely to blow anyone away.

The full underbody carbon fibre tray, the sculpted side arches and the additional swage lines on the C-post all make the car very aggressive to look at and demonstrate that it’s more than looks that have gone into the design. Add to that the huge rims and massive rubber and you have a car that looks like it means business.

Having left the demo car and spent hours sitting in it, studying it and looking at pictures we then went to where the cutaway version ones. With its rear mounted gearbox and transaxle you couldn’t help feel that some very innovative designers had worked on this car. Good front/rear weight ratios are certainly going to help stability. Let’s just hope you don’t break that gearbox!
