i have a intermittent problem with the starter motor on my r34 and its driving me mad, sometimes its perfect (moreso in warmer weather) and other times it jerks like crazy, still starts the car but makes a really rough sound it sounds kinda like power is being flicked on and of to the motor instead of a smooth cranking sound, i have removed the starter and taken it apart cleaned it and bench tested it and it worked okay but back on the car it was okay for about 5 starts then back to its old tricks again, im not sure if its the motor or any accosiated wiring or the battery or what! any advise or anyone had a similar problem please help!!!

it's either wiring -- most likely a dodgy earth to the solenoid, or a dodgy solenoid itself. but prob an earth! or a dirty connection for the 12v feed from the battery. also, check the battery connections - I've had problems where the earth ring connection around the battery post developed gunk inside it and caused similar probs.
