RB30 Which block?
I gather there is more than one RB30 block. When doing a RB30 conversion with and RB26 head for an R33 GTR how can I be sure I get the correct block? I gather you need certain oil feeds and returns and water feeds present and also positions for tensioner mountings.. Which of the blocks have all these facilities from factory or will it be most likely some machining is required of the block no matter which one you get?
Thank you Lee |

hi lee, you need a series 2 block from a turbo motor, it has oil feed and return already in but they are blanked off, so you just undue them,. also ion the front face of the block above the water pump it needs to be smooth, not a rough casting there are 2 types but most series 2 block are smooth, bernie.
![]() thats my series 2 block. if you look in the middle at the bottom of the block you can see were i took the bung out for oil return, also the smooth area. you have too drill and tap that for the new tensioner positioning.. |

yea, all r31 rb30's have the oil feed, and later vl commodore rb30's.
Where are you getting the block from? Aus or NZ? All rb30's in nz have the oil feeds. Also, you will need an adapter plate, are you going to buy one or make it? |

Fletch,
I was possibly going to source the block myself from Aus or NZ? I know a chap in Aus who may be able to sort something for me. Are the Aus blocks generally no good then? I have also been thinking about one that is currently on it's way from NZ. Regarding the adapter I would probably buy it? I guess it's just a peice of ally with a load of holes to extend the sump fixings to match the RB26? Do all blocks have the correct water feeds? And is it only turbo blocks that have the oil feeds? or do some N/A ones have them as well? Thank you Lee |

lee some n/a blocks have no return for the turbo in them at all be carefull. also the sump adapters are tricky to make and cost about 400 quid, but worth buying..proengines in syndey sold me mine and it bolted straight on no problem..bernie

Thank you Gibson and all.. I read a slight tone of insult taken there Gibson? None intended at all.. Just gathering more info for myself rather than pestering you!! Thought you might think I was being a pain in the butt! And I still have a big decision to make! Just not time to calculate at present!

The adapter plate is a piece of 8 or 10mm steel. I made a few a while ago for myself and a mate, I knew a laser cutter so it was cheap, but have lost the cad drawings. The best ones i have seen are the pro-engines ones, but are pretty exp, around $900 aus but its a complete kit, easy as to install and you dont need any trick machining. All the later vl blocks and all r31 blocks have the oil and water feeds |

Thanks for the info guy's!
Fletch if you find those CAD drawings let me know as it will save me having to redraw/model them myself! I was intending a DIY job if I go this route! How Did you get the drawings? A bit of trial and error on getting the correct profile? reverse engineer something? What does the 'complete kit consist of? what other bits are needed exactly? crank collar? How is this fitted by the way? Cheers Lee |
