HKS SSQV Racing vs standard SSQV
I bought the new SSQV Racing (which I guess supplants the old Racing BOV) as the standard SSQV cannot consistently hold 1.9 bar boost for long periods of time (3rd and 4th gear pulls).
It (finally) has an adjustment for the spring - people can argue all day long that a pull type BOV doesn't need adjustment, but control of the equalizing pressure on the other side (and the variation of which opens the valve) definitely can use help at high boost. Hence, I went for the racing version, designed for high-boost applications. Just idle thoughts - my car is due to be delivered any day now and I'm going out of my mind - the standard SSQV has the famous (infamous?) sound, yet I notice that the Racing version does not have any fins.Has anyone used the HKS Racing valve and comment on if it's quieter? The housings also look quite similar, if I fancy it, I may try and see if I can't fit the standard SSQV fins on |

the earlier type of SSQV didnt have fins either
aparently there were three models of the normal SSQV's (didnt know about the race ones) The early model had an adjustment screw on the back and smooth polished body The revised model lost the adjustment screw but kept the polished body The latest models have a dull cast type body with fins at the back |

if its the fin'd inserts such as the purple and the gold ones that you put inside then yes those change the sound of the release.
The HKS Racing BOV actually makes a sexy noise, much nicer than the SSQV, IMO. MANY of the Supra guys go with this unit since they love boost and need to hold it. As well, they keep quite on which BOV they run since everyone loves the sounds they make. Run the Racing BOV without any mods to it first, then go back and mess with it. And yes the older "SQV" did not have any fins located inside the mouth. The fins they implimented on the back of the housing are for looks alone on the SSQV that have just came out. THis was done to distingish the true products from fakes that were coming out of China |

Ahh i see
Here is a pic of mine which is the older non adjustable model so no screw at the back and no fins but does have the star shape ![]() Coolwhip is dead right , they keep changing to try and seperate them from the fakes as ebay is full of $50 SSQV's i dont think the basic design is different Love to hear the race version when its fitted , mine sounds the same as this YouTube - Supra HKS BOV |

However it sounds like, you'll definitely hear - once my car is broken in and up and running, I'll be running my usual mad 2 bars of boost, which will expel quite a bit of air through the BOV!

just an update - the Racing version holds my boost no problem, the preset screw setting works fine - releases easily yet doesn't leak at 1.9 bar.
I like the sound too - there's no high-pitched *choo*, it sounds like the air brakes on a bus. So long as it gets the job done though, I couldn't care less. But there is a holy hell of a racket with the intake cones whooshing, then the BOV release. A lot of air moving around! I've got my finned SSQV sitting around doing nothing. Anyone want it? |
