This maybe a stupid question, but could someone explain exactly what a stage 1 upgrade is?

Stage 1 is usually breathing mods, air filter(s), exhaust inc. downpipe and a boost increase.

There is no such thing as a "Stage" anything. It means different things to different companies and different people, ie, it's made up.
