Gutted CAT?
Has anyone ever gutted their cat? Aki gave me his old one and I’m thinking of gutting it, keeping mine for the inspection. I've done this before on naturally aspirated vehicles before but never on a turbo. Any views???

why would you? if you can legally get away with removing the cat, a bit of straight pipe should flow just as well if not better! plus, I took mine to the recyclers and got good coin for it - there is precious metal in them (palladium?)
but if you need to appear to still have your cat for inspections, then I suppose.... ahh, just read all your thread - appears in Japan they require catalysts for inspections!! you could always run a replacement pipe and just fit the heat shields to the outside of it so it appears to be a Cat!! |

"test pipes" (empty cats) are cheap and easy to find. Just replace your cat with one of those. Send the extra cat you've got to a recycler - the "active ingredient" inside a cat is platinum, and recovering it should be worth some coin to you, and in general it's a good thing to recycle, seeing as there isn't much of it on the planet.
In terms of performance, do you care about clean air? If the answer is "no", then the BEST turbo exhaust is one that is wide open, no restrictions at all. Not only have I removed my cat, I had the muffler box removed. Should provide a clear path in case I spit out an exhaust wheel ![]() |
