Tomei Cam Question

Is it necessary to have to buy the Tomei lifters when you buy the Tomei cams with 10.25 lift? Would using the stock lifters be ok?

I was told that I needed to upgrade the lifters when going above 9.25mm lift. They also recommend that you upgrade the valve springs as well.

You must buy the Tomei lifters, to get the extra lift the cams are ground with a smaller base circle diameter, which means you need lifters with added depth between cam lobe pad and shim extension. The higher lift Tomei cams need the cylinder head machining to clear the cam lobes, too.

true, but with Poncams no mods are necessary, although uprated springs can't hurt. I think the lift, 9.15mm, was chosen because it's the max you can get without having to modify the head or buckets, etc.

They are not manditory... but if you are going to use all or more of the revs , then for peace of mind they may be a worthwhile investment.
see now I'm convinced.. Group buy folks ?????

There is a lot of completely incorrect information in this thread. Kismetcaptain is right: Only use the Tomei lifters on Tomei Procams which have a smaller base circle than stock. With Poncams (Stock base circle) the stock lifters are what you need to run.

PON cams are designed as a straight drop in cam.
And as such use stock base circle, like Sam said.

AFAIK all Tomei RB* cams with 10.25 or more lift are small base circle and need the extended followers in order not to need ludicrously thick (and thus none stock size) shims.

Yes, those would be called Procams which I mentioned in my earlier post I guess they have models of Procam that seem to have the same specs as the Poncam (the 252° and 260°) which have std. base circle diameter so you are correct the 10.25 and up.
