No, he has won the same amount as Spitz 7 he is going for number 8 on Sunday
Slightly out there, he has won more then Spitz, he won 6 in Athens and has now won more gold medals then any other Olympian in history.

And while i must agree that Redgrave is well up there with the greats, and salute that his career lasted nearly 20 years. You have to consider the fact that Phelps hasn't just won his medals, he has smashed world records consistently, lifted the bar and has taken swimming to the next level. Something that Redgrave i believe did not do (this is no way a criticism of him)

Although, phelps is literally built for swimming......BBC NEWS | World | Asia-Pacific | Food for fuel: Olympian Phelps' unusual diet

He burns more calories, when sitting doing nothing then most people do when going for a brisk walk, thats scary!!

Anyway, i cant believe that Carl Lewis hasn’t been mentioned yet, he surely must be up there, and he just didn’t do one discipline, he was a sprinter and long jumper!!!!

Its like saying Wayne Rooney is the best footballer ever because Man U won the championship

Its not like Phelps has come from nowhere this is his second Olympics after doing pretty well in Athens and to date he has won 39 Golds, 6 silvers and 2 Bronze medals and he is only 23

Not to forget the 31 WORLD records the guy holds

Michael Phelps - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It nothing like comparing an eleven man team and implied that he came from nowhere. He's an incredible swimmer but in my eyes he needs to dominate the Olympics for another 8 years to achieve that hyper elite status.

Anyway its always going to be much easier (relatively) to dominate in swimming than any other sport.

Because in essence you're doing the same thing. 100 meters x 4, 100 medely, 100 breatstroke, etc...

He has won 13 over 2 Olympics (6+7), Spitz won 8 (7+1).

Yeah he is the most decorated olympian of all time. But now is going for the 8 medals in ONE olympics to beat Spitz's 7.

I do reckon he is up there with the greats, he does make it look easy but by no means does that mean it is...

there is obviously something physically different about him to the rest of the field. he's not winning these medals becasue he works harder or trains more than the next man. The way he breaks records suggests he's different.

he's the R32 GTR of Swimmers.

Genetics and hard work - that's the only way to become an Olympic champion. Either one without the other is no good.

Take this guy:

BBC SPORT | Olympics | Athletics | Bolt surges to gold in new record

The field didn't stand a chance.

Well that's like saying all running , rowing, jumping sports are the same

He has competed and won races in both 400m, 200m and 100m in the medley , butterfly, and freestyle

Clearly not similar styles at all

If the best Olympians are those who compete at the most Olympics there are a few ahead of Sir Steve on that count as well

that guy is unbelievable, didn't even reach 100% of his ability but blows the rest of them to bits and he didn't even care about breaking the WR, phenomenal, can't wait to see his future runs
