Got it in one. He has a very large stride for a sprinter.

Apparently that is only an advantage after 50 or so metres, apparently the shorter lads can get out the block and ahead until his legs get into full swing

Watch the US Basketball team play, then you will know.

The word is athlete, not specialist

He must have lunged some N2O from the polluted Beijing air.

A big stride has traditionally been a disadvantage in the 100 meters because, as you say, the smaller stride helps to get up and running quickly. The difference with Bolt is that he manages to get out of the blocks very quickly and then his stride and power enables him to leave the field.

He has changed the game.

Definitely, like the commentators said, in a few years time we can see the new 100m sprinters being taller after seeing it's not as much of a disadvantage as we all thought, as Bolt has proved.

I'm sorry.

I have to say that ANYONE that thinks Phelp's achivements are not "great" due to the events being "the same" really haven't tried swimming proplery.

Butterfly is COMPLETELY different to Breaststroke, ect, ect.

I do 500M EVERY weekday morning, I can vouch that the techniques used for all events are VERY different - Phelp's achivement seems easy due to just how great a swimmer he really is. The thing is, he trounced the competition, they aren't there to make the numbers up, they are also top swimmers.

IMHO, Phelp's IS THE GREATEST OLYMPIC ATHLETE.

They are great achievements no doubt about it, but to title him the worlds greatest olympian...?

Oh and well done on swimming 500m butterfly, never tried it myself and wouldn't know where to start.

You'd be surprised but let's not bother with off topic nonsense shall we.

Redgrave was good enough to win the gold for 5 olympics in a row.

Agreed ,to do all that over that amount of years makes him one of the best imo too. Great for someone to have a fantastic Olympics but to keep doing it for 5 in row is massive
