Michael Phelps is not the greatest Olympic athlete in history

Steve Redgrave is in my opinion.

Hercules is in my opinion but fair point. Performing at top flight rowing for 20 years is some achievement.

Michaels Phelps has won more golds than any other Olympian to state it accurately.

Swimming has four different variations over slightly different lengths, rowing has one. I'd like to see Phelps cope with diabetes doing what he does.

Redgrave or Daily Thompson without a doubt

Is that like Daily Sport?

Daley Thompson was indeed awesome, as a Decathlete the skill required to master a number of disciplines as he did is truly unbelievable.

No, he has won the same amount as Spitz 7 he is going for number 8 on Sunday

Its a massive acheivement for the guy to compete with the worlds best and get gold 7 times, its stupendous even if the last one was by 100th of a second and ALL in record time, no other athlete has ever dominated the Olympics like he has.

Much as SIR Steve has a fantastic record for the nation to be proud of he is for sure Britains greatest Olympian but a long way off the achievements of Phelps

I disagree.

I don't believe you can count the swimming golds in the same way as other events.

Redgrave won gold medals in five consecutive Olympics while rowing in three different boat types. It's the fact that he has performed at the top for 20 years which makes him stand out from the crowd. Let's see if Phelps can maintain his game over that long.

Hat's off to Phelps but he'll need to be at the top for another eight years to make it for me. Judging by the look of him he may well do that.

Redgrave didnt do it on his own though but as part of a team

Its like saying Wayne Rooney is the best footballer ever because Man U won the championship

Its not like Phelps has come from nowhere this is his second Olympics after doing pretty well in Athens and to date he has won 39 Golds, 6 silvers and 2 Bronze medals and he is only 23

Not to forget the 31 WORLD records the guy holds
