New stereo...

Im planning on buying a new stereo cd player for my R34 GTT...was thinking of buying it from Halfords and getting them to fit it...anyone done this before??...

wasnt sure if the Skyline wiring etc needed a bit more of a specialist touch??...

if fitting a 34 srereo is anywhere near as fiddly as fitting a 33 one, i wouldn't touch Hellfrauds with a barge pole.

halfords are daft on prices, best to see a specialist although they would usually charge abit more for installation than halfords would at least they would genuinely be concerned about damaging the car where as halfords will just see it as another job nothing more.
if you feel confident and have the patience have a crack yourself. all the harnesses and conectors are available.

You just need someone who has done it before.
After watching a local audio shop unclip my dash, I have been able to remove mine myself ever since - its just a case of knowing where the clips are.
The thing to watch out for (on an R33 at least) is that none of the wires at the back get too close to the aircon.
Make sure you start the engine and turn on the aircon before you put everything back - if it clicks its because a wire is obstructing the moving parts.

Maybe there is another forum user in your area that can show you - what area are you in?

Thanks for the responses...

Ive used Halfords before...but that was for other cars ive owned...cars with simpler wiring...it was trsusting halfords with my Skyline that i wasnt sure about...

I would have the patience to do the job myself but definately not the confidence or know how...im happy to pay a specialist to do the job as much for peace of mind as anything...

I live in Meopham in Kent...must be a few places round about me...just need to find them...

Not sure about fitting for an R34 but generally fitting a radio is easy. Assuming that the R34 doesn't have an ISO connector then you just need a harness adapter which should cost no more than £15. If you have a screw-driver then you can do the rest with ease. Someone will have a removal/fitting guide for an R34 somewhere.

Well...ive decided to have a go myself...how bad can it go!!...dont answer that...

Does anyone know how to remove a R34 dash??...

The other thing is i think the stereo will be narrower than my existing one...so may need a facier to mount it in but had a hunt round the net but couldnt find anything...

This may be of some use. Doesn't list any skylines but the harness adapters will most likely be concurrent (I used a Micra adapter for mine).

This might be what you're after too - eBay Item number: 250282064245

I'd imagine that an R34 owner can advise better though

I wouldn't let Haulfrauds touch YOUR car - let alone mine!

DOOOOONT USEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALFRAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUD DDDSSSS

Seriously... they suck balls mate. Just do it yourself (taking your time) or if you really dont want to try yourself, get a mate to do it who's done them before or goto a respectable car audio store.

If yours is an R34 then I'd be looking at the 99 onwards section. 94-98 will be R33.

Perhaps some other R34 members with aftermarket radios can comment on where they got the fascia plates for their R34s?

Cris...

My R34 is July 98 hence why i went for the 94-98 adapter...

If your right then its no great loss really...just £14...

At least with having a go at the stereo myself if it does go wrong its not a major problem...just take the bits along to someone who does know what they're doing...

Not sure if its too late and you have done it but basically:

1 - First pull out the ashtray and undo the screw behind it.
2 - Pull up the gear stick surround and undo the 2 silver screws at the bottom left/right of the storage bin. Best to pull from underneath the hand brake.
3 - Using a thin flat blade screwdriver (put a cloth round the blade so you dont mark the plastic) on the left side, prise out the 2 vents at the top of the console and disconnect the unit.
4 - Undo the 2 silver screw at the top of the heater controls.
5 - Pull out the heater controls, radio & stage bin (all in a cage together).
6 - Remove the radio from the cage (2 screws each side) and fit your radio.

Refit going from step 5

Hope this helps
