Recycling

Im am very very pi55ed off with my council. I am all for recycling but i today received an £80 fin for over filling my recyling bin. In the borough of hertsemere we have two wheelie bins one for general rubish and one for recyling ie food waste, grass clippings, brown card and wood. Then we have two boxes, one for cans and bottles and one for paper rubbish. Every week i sort the cr*ap out so everytrhing goes where it should but for the past two weeks i have had a little more than usual recycling waste due to decorating, being at home etc so there has been more to recycle than usual.
Now this is what pi55es me off the most, its bad enough that i pay over £2000 per anum in council tax but they have also made it clear that they 'MAKE' money from our recycling rubbish by extracting electricity and selling the plastic bottles etc to foreign countries who use them.....So why is it that despite me doing my bit and having loads of stuff to recylce i get a fookin fine?????? Absolute to55ers.....Not only are they making more money out of me by recycling more, they are also fining me for the b100dy privelage...

RANT OVER!!!!!!

did they empty it and charge 80quid? If they left it tell em piss off your not paying it as they didn't do their job and its pure moneymaking and if they say you have to tell em you'll see em in court - I'm sure they'll not want to contest it over 80quid esp. as you pay as much c.tax as you do and comply with their stupid rules any other time.

Hang on. 'Over-filling' your recycling bin? What do they expect you to do with the excess then? You can't put it in the general waste bin because then you'd be fined for a crime against the environment. Do they expect you to keep the crap in your house?

I'd write in to the news.

This is ridiculous. So the government wants us to recycle, but recycling too much gets penalizsed?! Someone needs their head rattling...

Sounds like they want to make more money while making money
What a load off b*ll, how do you overfill a trash bin? I would ask myself what they suggest you do with the "left overs"...

Did you overfill it with the correct materials?

If you did I suggest you ring up the environmental services for a chat, most of them are human and you will get way further than ranting. It might be you qualify for a larger container or they will waive it in this instance if you have a proper conversation with them.

If, however, you stuffed whatever trash was left in there, well you won't get much sympathy. Oh and councils ARE taking people to court over their £80 quid fines, so I don't suggest ignoring it.
T
p.s. do people realise that rubbish collection is around 3-5% or so of your council tax...

Couldn't agree more.

Fly tip it.
They'll have to collect it then. Tossers.

Honestly, you try your best & they want to screw you anyway. Makes my blood boil.

These laws are in place to prevent the UK getting fined by the EU for not reducing landfill waste by set targets.

The fact that they are fining the recycling bin is totally stupid; it's out of order (but understandable) for fines like this for landfill bins, but for recycling?

I'd say have a chat, as per above, if no joy then go to the press - they'd love a story like this.

Solve the problem, don't recycle, stick everything in the normal wheelie bin and by doing that

1) you won't get fined
2) they won't make money selling the stuff you recycle

1) If you fly tip you pay to clear it up. Now that DOES cost the council tax payer money.

2) As correctly pointed out above, councils are FORCED to recycle. They have targets, imposed by the EU, that must be met. TBH and good thing to, because guess what, we are running out of holes to dump it. So wake up boys and girls, it's not about empire building it's about we HAVE to do SOMETHING with it.

3) Making money from recyclables. Get real. At most the council is hoping to recupe some of the money it has laid out on expensive recycling kit and ergo reduce your council tax liability.

4) In many areas dumping all your recyclables into your wheeled bin could result in a further fine, so be careful with that one.

Nice post Tony!

Gez,

I've a question. Why didn't you just save the excess for next week's collection? That's what I've done on a couple of occasions.

The reason they state that the bins cannot be over filled is because stuff may fall out when it's being taken to the truck and that it may be too heavy for smelly people that collect your rubbish. Now the first point I agree with, but the second... come on.

Ok to reply to some questions.....

The bin was overfilled and they did collect it...I got a lette through the post with a pretty little picture lol....

I would have saved it till the next collection but hertsmere have the most stupid collection scheme....

week 1. General waste wheelie bin along with the cans and bottles box
week 2. Green wheelie bin with grass cuttings, wood, brown card food and the paper box.
If i wanted to wait till next collection it would have been two weeks and that old pizza would have collected maggots lol.

I am all for recycling but pls dont peanlise me for recylcling too much. Absolute to55ers.
