Do you think Porsche will "React"

Like Russia last week or they play it cool and see if 911 sales pick up with their new 7 speed DSG?

By all accounts they are working on a new button/paddle setup for the PDK gearbox as the current setup has annoyed every journo thats used it!

That aside, the GTR has raised the benchmark for every manufacturer, and since the market is very tough right now, how many of them have the funds to develop a car to match the GTR's leap forward in technology?

This could indeed be "Concorde".

Yes Porsche will react. They already did with the 911, giving it direct injection and a few tweaks. Will they answer the GT-R directly, by building something entirely new? Perhaps, but the recessionary winds of depression may hamper that endeavor.

Its going to be difficult for all the German car manufactures. I currently drive a 911 S. two years ago a decent spec S came in around £70K. Today the same spec is £80K. So Porsche are going to have to pack in more performance and an abundance of standard equipment for less money? All this whilst retaining their considerable profit margins. They do have history and snobbery on their side, but i think that with an ever expanding product range (not entirely complimentary to the 911 heritage) i think that pedigree is being diluted.

Porsche already have a rival/match for the GT-R, it's the Turbo, but of course it's twice the price and doesn't quite perform.

Before the GT-R came out I was going to get a 2nd hand turbo, I currently drive a Cayman. What Nissan have done is not so much an engineering achievement and an accounting and engineering achievement.

Some people buy for the badge not the car. Porsche won't build to compete with the GT-R on price as it would devalue thier whole range. Why spend 120k on a Turbo when a Porsche superdupa performs better for less money.

A copy of Porsche Club mag dropped through my door over teh weekend (this is paid for by PGB). The editorial was talking about new Porsche rivals from the recent motorshows. It mentioned Lotus, Artega, Honda, Farbio, Beira, Gumpert and Spyker. No mention of Nissan though, maybe they hope it will go away if they don't admit it exists.

I predict that Porsche will react. They'll probably understeer a little on entry and the oversteer viciously upon correction.

There's nothing to stop them going back to a 959 philosophy I guess.

Do they need to react considering their sales profile?

I'm defecting....but people like me are fickle and the moment the Mk2 GT3 is here, I will buy.

Not sure your typical 911 Turbo owner is worried too much about the GTR though.

Im not so sure, i took a phone call this morning from someone wanting his alloys done, before we got into details i happened to mention my GTR trackday at Silverstone last week.

He then went into one about how Nissan had upped the power on the GTRs at Silverstone and it was not really the car everyone was making out.

Lo and behold when we got round to taking his details, a 911 driver ,

Im sure this was a one of, just made me laugh thats all

Sad, ignorant twat......

It still amazes me how "brand stupid" people can be.

And why would Nissan go to that much trouble to impress people who have already bought one?? Seems that logical thought disappears once you own a set of 911 keys......

Car & Driver are trying this "Test car have MEGA power" line, but got caught short on it. Private imports with NO in house "Perparation" were beating press fleet Porsches.

Porsche already have reacted to the GTR

Its called the GT2 and it lapped the evo test track (bedfford autodrome west circuit) in 1.23.5 decimating the GTRs time of 1.23.6

So it didnt take porsche long at all to raise there game, or there price at a mere 80k more

Actually its worth the 80k as the GT2 is gorgeous

GT2 was around before the GT-R. The GT-R was Carlos Ghosen's pet project because he was sick of driving a porsche turbo around Tokyo when he felt Nissan could achieve the same, if not better.

Funniest bit was when he was pulled over for speeding... in the Porsche... Had to explain his way out of that one.

Anyway, the GT-R is there to compete directly with the Porsche Turbo segment of buyers: Successful, middle aged men looking for lots of performance IF needed but mainly wants a great car. The only difference is Carlos had to make it more affordable cos no one in their right mind was going to pay Yen19m for a Nissan.

Carlos is a genius.

porsche only need to make the 911 turbo as fast as the r35. thats easily obtainable for porsche. they just have to take a leap forward and say, ya nissan was right, well follow in there foot steps and by doing so saying nissan is great.

they wont copy exactly, but they will make a car worth the money compaired to what its worth now compaired to the r35.

so with dual clutch an advanced awd, major engine update with advanced vv turbos etc etc etc... it can achive this. i dunno its already 480hp can porsche do it without increasing the horse power? thats the tricky part. they already have gt2 which is still danger to the road because of its design rear engine rear drive, talented drivers will make it so gracefull tho. but then again its more hp, its more money and its not awd... so its not really compairo to the r35 (tho the r35 performance is simular around a race track (as in numbers)).
