syncros versus engine rpm
in some ways, I'm a gutsy driver. But honestly, I've never, ever taken my engine past 8500rpm, nor have I performed a reasonably quick upshift at that rpm as well (in general driving, I spend a full second shifting gears, losing much time to 80ms auto-shifters, but preserving my gearbox).
But fairly soon, my car will see some action, where I'll need to make quick shifts and use a 9000rpm redline. Is this where R32/R33 transmissions break? Do the syncros have a difficult time with the high rpms, or are they ok? cars with syncros make it hard to discern, but on a lot of bikes (my BMW has a non-syncro straight cut dog-box, and it shifts like a bucking mule), the transmissions have a "sweet spot" where shifting goes smoothly. I imagine H-pattern car transmissions also have an RPM range where they're most happy, but this is masked by the syncros (of course, that's the purpose of those, otherwise we'd all be jerking around with dog-boxes, fighting the gear shift!) So how is the GT-R 5speed when shifting at 9000+rpm? |

Dont shift fast.
Medium quick change. Mates car pulls 9k all the time , standard R33 box, over 700hp. Always run redline in it , never missed a beat. He has just got a NEW last of the R33 box which is stronger again than the normal R33. I damaged my standard r32 box by shifting way too fast, it was still strong as , but the synchro's were definately on there way out. |
