holset hx35w
I have been offered a hx35w (internal wastegate) turbo for my rb30 build. Just wanted to know has anyone tried and tested a hx35w on any rb engine and what sort of power they make.
I will be putting this onto a standard manifold for now and with standard rb30 refreshed internals. I want roughly 500hp for now anyway. |

I don't know of anyone who have used one on an RB but I believe they tend to be good for around the 500hp mark on a petrol motor with pretty decent spool, depending at least on turbine housing. I'd be wary of the internal gate setup though as I have it in my head that some of the diesel turbos can come sprung to some silly boost levels.

It is a waste of time to bother dicking around with the Holset's internal wastegate. Purchase a non-wastegated turbine housing- they are very inexpensive.
On another note, any form of HX35 will be too small for an RB30 in my opinion. Search this forum for "Super 40" and you'll find more information on better-suited inexpensive Holset turbos that will work for you. |

I thought hard about an HX35W but decided it looked like it'd take up too much space and ended up going for a GT30R. The GT30R doesn't even strictly speaking fit there, I have a 10mm spacer to move it away from the block a bit as the compressor housing fouls it a bit. I reckon a T04Z would be possible there, though it would be a waste of time as the factory manifold starts become a huge restriction at much over 400whp.
