STOP-TECH BRAKES

What size discs are recommended for the R33 GTR from the Stoptech range and also are grooved better or the drilled ones. Sizes are; 332x32, 355x32, 355x35. Would upgrades all round be overkill or would just the fronts suffice from their balanced brake range. I ask this because I see a lot of cars with just the fronts upgraded only. I am led to believe that the Stoptech kits are the best matched for the Skylines?? any truth to this?? looking to upgrade the brakes on my car, was thinking of doing it at all 4 corners, would doing the rears be unnecessary??.

Hi mate, I have been running the 332mm kit front and rear on the Taisan with no issues once the pads where sorted. I would say to check if your wheels will clear the bigger discs first. Doing the front and rears is not overkill and the seem quite well balanced on mine.

Exclamation

Clearance of the discs should be O.K as I'me running 19s now John. Grooved or Drilled discs, which are supposed to be better?? I'll be going for the Zinc finished ones. John as you have first hand experience with the Stoptechs, is there, or would you, look into another brand that is maybe in your opinion comparable to the Stoptechs?? or is there no comparison, whats your opinion??

I'v got the grooved 355 kit on my 33.18" wheels with standard rear brembo brakes. This seems to be enough for fast road use.

I always worry about drilled discs cracking. Porsche seem to get away with it though .

Jeff I think they are fine for what they are but I would say that the AP's are far better but unless you plan is to be on track every other weekend the Stop tech kit is fine.
I am finding they give a lot of pad knock off under hard breaking
example at Brands down the start finish straight I was pulling 136 mph in 4th gear breaking hard and shifting down to 3rd for Paddock Hill bend, back into 4th and then hard breaking shifting down to 2nd for Druids, the pedal would have more travel going into Druids after hard breaking from Paddock.

John,

you my find this is due to pad knock back , possible caused by the front wheel bearing moving in the front up right (hub) once the hub gets hot the bearing loses it interference fit in the hub , the allows the drive flange and rotor to push the pads back.

I always give the brake pedal a tap with my left foot after every corner ( very light tap) to push the pads back onto the rotor.

we drill and tap the hub for grub screws to postively lock the bearing into the hub.

hope this helps.

Mark

That's what I am trying now, first attempt I nearly locked up the front wheels getting a bit better now

cheers

Pupsi, how much torque is your 33 putting out? I'm at 450 ATH and have Stoptech 355mm front & rear, 4 pot front, 2 pot rear, with Ferodo DS2500 pads. Drag the beast down a treat, even when switching from hard acceleration to hard braking. Discs are plain, no grooves.

Other details on demand via email from Abbey. Note that the Stoptech rears will need modifications to the pad retaining pin clip for regular road use, but Abbey know how to do that after mine demonstrated a factory weakness.

In my experience, AP discs are no good for a regular track use. They are simply not up to the job of stopping 1600+kg of Skyline repeatedly. AP calipers are fantastic, but look elsewhere for discs.

Seconded & thirded .....

Don't touch AP's with a bargepole (if you're doing lots of trackdays )

Are you suggesting that Moley may come home with more Armco stuck to his car if the discs are no good?
