R33 Cold Air Feed
Has anyone succesfully made a really good air feed to the induction filter?
I have been looking at the space with dismay at how on earth you could get air to the filter without having miles of unsightly piping in the engine bay. I guess there are a few options like cutting holes in the metal/bonnet or running a long pipe. I guess the original air feed design didn't count on anyone doing away with it for an induction kit. There isn't anywhere else that can get the air there that i know of..better than the original. I have seen some nice copys of the original design but was trying to tap some of the creative output of maybe some of you guys. Like many, I'm trying to get the best perfomance i can for the least money..I won't allow dodgy mods on my skyline but just because it maybe DIY doesn't mean it won't perform as good as something that costs £200+ As this will take money away from kit that can only be bought. If anyone has had any succes making a smart kit then i would love to see it. Regards Jonathon (Poor student ) |

Jonathan,
Start by taking out the rubber strips on top of the headlights. This will let a bit more air into the engine bay above the lights. Have you removed the 'piece of plastic' blocking the inner wing on the LHS? This will also help. Ab-flug do a scoop that bolts on to existing bonnets above the air filter. All you have to do is cut a hole in the bonnet to let the air in. Have you thought about making a custom light fitting? You could replace the twin headlamps with a single element and leave a hole where the old one was. Option Motorsport's R33 has something similar (no lights at all on that side!). I've removed the front indicators on my R33. The air that now flows into this space could be channelled up to the air kit. One last point, as well as getting more air in you need also to keep it from getting too hot - if possible. St-May do a device to shroud the air filters. Unfortunately it's only available in carbon so would probably cost a bit. John |

Thanks John & Lee
You have given me something to work with now anyway. I wouldn't cut the bonnet..did think about cutting some metal to channel the air. If I go with an uprated intercooler I could use one of the old holes to put a cold air feed through..that would be spot on actually. cheers for the inspiration Jonathon |

i think the only real way you could ram air feed the filters would be to cut a hole through to the front left hand side indicator. alternatively, i was looking at modifying the original air box that came with the car, maybe cut it a little shorter as that has an air scoop, but won't fit with my hks filters on.

Moschops: yes, just use the template to cut out a cardboard mockup...then tweak it to suit your filter/intercooler setup.....should save a lot of time....
Gary: Can't wait to see the Master's professional take on this....watching that space..... Have fun all... JonB |
