Hmmmmm......
0.55 AR is smaller than std I believe.
And I think they use a T04 front as std. Found this looking for info for you..... http://www.gti-r.org/tech/tech.htm TURBO TYPE T28 GARRETT CODE TB2804 COMPRESSOR WHEEL DIAMETER/TRIM 60 mm / 60 TURBINE WHEEL DIAMETER/TRIM 53 mm / 79 A/R HOUSING 0.86 inches GARRETT PART NO. 465997 - 0004 There you go. The smaller exhaust housing will make it spool up quicker compared to now. But remember that you wont be able to get rid of the gases as quick as before, which is not too good. A T04 exhaust housing is not small, its big? T3s go as big as 0.63 off the shelf....T4s go bigger - lots! |

I think by 'smaller' he means smaller than the normal T66 housing, which is huge.
Personally I think it's all far to big for a 2.0 engine, but might be worth a try provided you don't rule out other options when fitting (custom ex manifold for example). The T66 compressor map shows it's good for 65lbs of flow, which equates to over 600hp, but it's only good for 60lbs flow at 2.4bar boost (3.4 absolute). But on a 2.0 engine it will surge until about 6000rpm, limiting the boost you will be able to run (like 0.8bar at 3500rpm or so to prevent surge). Maybe worth a try but more of a turbo for a 2.5 or larger engine. Edited because I remembered it had a smaller compressor cover too... Which will reduce the flow and surge, and should make the turbo much better suited to a smaller engine. Probably worth a try, just for the hell of it. The compressor a/r is not going to tell you much about the spool up. The exhaust side on a T66 IS a T04 thats why it looks like one
Not sure if its wise going for one of the smaller housings (0.58 or 0.69 a/r ratio) with such a huge compressor. You really have to expect a fair amount of lag, otherwise go for a smaller turbo.Remember reading about a Swedish Evo running some very high power with one of these things. Seems a bit excessive to me for a 2 litre for anything other than drag racing (with a very highly modified engine). |

There are two other GTi-R's in the UK who are using this turbo don't know which spec though.Just looked on the compressor side it reads A/R
.55 M12 P the turbo is going to be used for drag racing anyway so spool up isn't the main reason for getting the turbo any idea when it might hit full boost?? |

It sounds like it's a T66 wheel in a smaller housing which has been profiled to suit. Larger wheels can be laggier, in that they take longer to spin up between gears say, simply due to them being physically large and having more innertia.
However, larger wheels tend to flow well so the boost threshold isn't as bad as you may think mainly being dicated by the exhaust side. T66 is a BIG wheel though, 92mm or so, which is huge even compared to say a 500hp rated Garrett GT30 with a 76.2 (3") wheel. Just to give you some comparison! Smaller A/R exhaust housing will deffo improve spool up though. But as Papa L says they should be balanced (ex and comp that is). Paul |
