Transmission Oil Cooling Solutions
Other than fitting an entirely new oil transmission cooler, I'm thinking the combination of the following should have a substantial impact especially for those tracking the car and then between sessions avoid the massive heat soak from the exhaust.
First: cooling fins ARC International Inc. IN JAPAN | トータルチューニングパーツ | 熱交換機器開*・製造 This product looks very basic and I think would be a pretty good short term solution IF it fits ok. Anyone got any experience of this? Second: ceramic coating Welcome to Performance Coatings The exhaust is the most obvious source of heat soak. I'm too swamped to get this done anytime soon but would love to hear from anyone that tries it... Anyone in Singapore or US???

the trans gets so hot on a track day that this solution isnt going to do much. it may help from going into gimp mode for a standard r35, but put some more horsepower on the car and it may do just that, gimp...
I HOPE this solution helps from getting a gimp. if it gets hot, thats fine as long as it doesnt let you loose, right ![]() and yes, next to the trans being really hot the next source is obviously the exhaust. im wondering if a stainless steel solution will help fight the heat more... doesnt it wick heat away more so than titainum? |

I have previously used thermal coating for my turbos and down pipe for my rex and evos.
It does significant drop the temp emmitting from the turbos, but i think the problem with the transmission in the GTR is that it will still remains hot even with these. The problem is a) there is a lower cover that conceals the trans and b) that area is generally drag efficient. Meaning, unless u lose the cover and install a 'scoop' to divert the air, its not going to help the heat soak one bit... |

well.. gimp mode has only happend on a few cars due to overheating of the engine oil... not trans oil. and never on the first lap. usually its been a hot day out with a few laps before.
king abarth has a point also. |

The diff cooler will be completed soon. I think there's some unique challenges when fiddling with this transmission and probably a bit of R&D needs to go into making one without causing other issues with trans oil pressure etc. Wrapping or coating the exhaust is great if you want to spend the money, keeping the heat inside the exhaust is a great way to keep gas velocity high and hence exhaust flow but coating is well expensive. Wrapping isn't bad if done well and not too costly. The ARC Cooling fins is fine, you can make it fit anything you want really as you can cut it and use as much or as little as you want. Ducted rear diffuser is also a good solution but no-one outside Nismo is doing it just now so you'd need to go custom. Last edited by sewid; 6th September 2008 at 05:07 PM. |

look at this pic and you'll see it's pretty obvious how much heat will be stuck under the car when not moving. i'm definitely going for the wrapping or some sort of heat shield/diffuser scoop option.
