Leaky body/sunroof
Just got a lovely looking 96 Dayz RS4 (4 days ago). After a very wet 200 mile journey to bring it home I now find I have a puddle behind the drivers seat. I suspect it is coming in through the rear sunroof but it should still not flood the rear drivers side footwell. Can anyone help????

Sorry to hear your having this problem
![]() Try this! behind the drivers side front wheel guard there is a grommet with loads of wires going thru the firewall while driving in heavy wet weather it can flood in thru there and run down into the cabin and into the back! try using silicon sealer to mask it up. I found this out on skylinesaustralia.com Either that or its the roof bars or just the sunroof or sunroofs! You could also try cleaning out the drains for the sunroofs! Hope you get it sorted mate

Very hard to clean all of the rear sunroof seal as it goes inside the roof area when retracted and is very hard to access when closed but the front seal is easy to get to and clean.

Sunroof
One side of the rear sunroof isn't seating properly. The motor on the front one stops when it has closed fully but the rear one continues to whirr when the sunroof has stopped moving. Have removed Mazda and VW sunroofs in the past, but I had a repair manual both times, can anyone help (this one is different again)?
It looks like this one has been removed and put back wrong (but the seal looks in good condition). Ta Martin |

Sounds just like my own one when it comes to its position. The fact that it still makes noise once its closed is normal ( I think lol ) I know mine does it
If we can get more guys with stageas having an look at there roofs and taking a few pics we can see what people with no leaks roofs look like! Come on guys get on this so we can get it sorted for him nothing worse than a leaking car ![]()

Thanks
Cheers Jonny/Dave.
I've covered the car for now and as soon as I get a rain free day (hopefully before Xmas) I'll start taking bits off. I always thought of Skyline owners as posers and pimps, but I was wrong, in the main you're pretty cool dudes. Thanks again Martin |

If the roof is one of those that drops into the roof and slides back then they are not actually designed to be completely water tight when shut... Inside round the edge should be a gutter, If you carefully pour water into the gutter it should run away down pipes that exit somewhere low down (Usually in a wheel arch) You will tell straight away if any are blocked with this test, Its quite common for there to be 4 of these drains, One in each corner...(Providing its this type, As my R33 has no sunroof im not sure what design would be fitted).
A long bit of MIG welding wire and compressed air seem the most effective ways to clear any blockage. As for your continued motor operation, I have to wonder if there is an adjustable switch in there that informs the motor when the roof is fully closed, Either way, I have a feeling you will be removing the roof some point soon. One other thing to check would be the motor drive electronics, Maybe a sticking relay is making it run on ? Last edited by Marky_GTSt; 11th September 2008 at 10:42 AM. |

Cheers Marky
Using a bit of brake cable I poked around the top holes and there seems to be no blockage there, I can't find the exit holes around the wheel arches, but due to the weather it's not been conducive to laying around on my back for a thorough inspection. Just waiting for a break in the clouds. Thanks for your comments at least I know I'm on the right track. Ta Martin |

I think the front roofs is not a straight slide and although the rear one may appear so i think it slides and then levels out - the motor continuing is probaly the last bit.
If my memory serve me right ( stagea away at present so cant check) the front one does tilt and slide and so the motor is supposed to continue to run after it seems to have shut on both . If its been removed and replaced my money would be on incorrect replacement .

Recently had the same problem with my rear sunroof, kept finding water in my spare wheel well.
I loosened the three nuts that hold the glass to the mechanism and placed a thin strip of metal in between.Around 3 mm I then tightened the nut again. This raised the sun roof just enough to stop the problem and has no effect on the operation. No more water !! Hope this makes sense and good luck ! |

I checked all the drainage channels from both sunroofs and they appear to be clear of debris and functioning well.
At last the rain held off long enough for me to get under the car (I've only had it a week; is it global warming or liquid cooling). Jonny you were kinda right with your first posting. The numpty in Japan that fitted the GReddy boost gauge, not only used the hole where the bonnet release cable goes and didn't fill the gap, but also failed to replace the clips that hold the wheel arch guard. Without those clips and release cable grommet in place I could have poured water in with a jug. I didn't notice at first, that the drivers foot well was also wet, as most of the water went behind the drivers seat. Have used clips from the front of the guard until I can get some more and have tried to seal round the cable. The big grommet seems sound and not the problem but I could see straight in through the other holes. Now to let the car dry out and I'll look at the crooked sunroof another day! Thanks again guys it was good to know I wasn't suffering alone. Martin ![]() |
