Datalogger / Datascan / blaZt on R34?

Sorry if this has already been asked... couldnt find many posts about it. Could someone tell me what i need to connect my laptop upto a R34?

Take it i need a cable but is it USB or RS232? Also where does this plug into?
Please excuse my ignorance but i'm still getting used to where things are!

Also whats the difference between the software packages available, whats the best one? Do they all pretty much do the same?

Cheers for the help!

I own a 32, so the help might no be so meaningful, but here goes.

If I remember right, when Clarkson reviewed the 34 on Top Gear, he joked about the ability to download information from the car via a wire he held up to the camera. That looked like a serial (RS232) cable. But, if your car is like mine (and looking through the net at consult sites, it's seems it is), the Consult connector I use is located next to the fuses underneath my right knee inside a little hatch. It's grey in colour and has 14 pins, with one straight end and the other has a a \_/ kind of shapr. I use a Blazt cable (USB) to connect to my car. The USB cable still utilises a serial connection, but as I had no serial port, I couldn't use that one. You will need to install drivers in order for it to work over a virtual com port. Or, if you use Linux, like I do now, it'll just work

As for the software, I've only used a few, ECUTalk (free) and DataScan (free limited demo and option to purchase full version). They both were good in their way, not exactly pretty, especially Datascan, but you could read from a multitude of sensors etc, I think Datascan had the logger and was a little more features such as the timer for speed trials etc.
