I just talked to the guy's at tomei, and they recomended to go with the stock pump. Yes this came from tomei. They said since i'm only going for 600 hp. the tomei pump is overkill since it needs oil pan modifications for more volume. Tomei said there pumps are good for car's 700-1200hp.

The pump is only as good as the harmonic balancer.

Unhappy

This thread seams to be a bit of a circular argunment!!

Every one is saying go Tomei, (execpt Tomei themselves ), but there has been example of all types failing.

I have fitted a Nismo and I am 100% confident in my choice despite reading this thread. If Tomei guys say it a stock pump, then surley you wouldn't go too far wrong going one up on that advise with a Nismo pump which is a beefed up standard pump.

Or are people saying Nismo make shit parts here??? Worse then stock parts in fact???

Nismo's web site says the 400R's had a standard oil pump, and I can find any reference the the Z-Tune's having anything different either.

Is there a bit of badge snobbery here?

i don't understand why Tomei would tell you that you need an oil pan with extra capacity to run their pump when they don't even sell a product like that. they do sell an oil pan baffle to help prevent starvation, but no sump extension, or replacement oil pan with extra capacity, etc...

Isnīt it maybe the case that excessive vibrations and/or movement at high rpmīs is what killed all the pumps? And if so, wouldnīt a setup like N1 pump and crank damper sort it?

I've been convinced after speaking to many knowledgable people on this matter that as long as your bottom end is balanced properly including the clutch and having the pistons / rods weight matched, you stick to a sensible Rev limit and you show some mechanical sympathy (ie not banging it down a gear in such a fashion that the revs shoot up well past your rev limit - no rev limiter can stop that.) an N1 pump will be fine for a medium tuned street car.

Sounds like a good idea, but theories and realities fail.

I think there is an actual problem with the casting, or manufacturing of the N1 pumps. I ran them in the past on 600 hp cars with no issue. I ran them on lots of things. Then more recently we had a ton of them fail in a row. Every single one failed. Stock dampers, stockish engines. ATI damper's. 500 hp cars, 400 hp cars.

I am all for the Tomei pump. The gear on the Tomei pump is double the size of the stock, Nismo, HKS, Greddy, etc. We ran the Nismo pump on the World Challenge car and it was fine, even at a couple of 11k rpm mis-shifts a race.

I know that if a Tomei pump fails, another pump would have failed long before.

I also like the idea of being able to alter the bypass valve pressure externally. Without the stock bypass (pressure relief valve) hanging down into the sump it LOOKS like you could change the Tomei one without dropping the sump, in an emergency.... not that I can think of a suitable emergency though

Yeah I thought that too....however, the gear is so much larger, that now that is the limiting factor in pulling it straight out.

Ah, right, I see it now in a pic earlier in the thread, thanks.

Had a disastrous day, I thought I'd just fettle the exhaust ports on my brand new head casting (professionally ported, but I hadn't decided single turbo or twins, so he left the exits near stock for me to finish...) Having decided to go twins on ported stock manifolds I needed to just belnd the ports to the gasket shape, together with the stock manifolds. The burr came out of the die grinder and has marked the exhaust manifold face of the head, so I will have to mill it back flat about 15 thou. Could be worse, but I was NOT happy when I did that...
