How To Tell Apart GT-R Twin Turbo's??

Hi Guys,

A friend of mine has a R32 GTR which has supposedly got HKS GT-SS's turbo's fitted. The turbo's themselves look very standard with a fancy HKS hardpipe kit. They still have the AFM's also attached.

We were wondering on how can you tell the turbo's apart so that we can say whether they really are hks units or standard twins or N1 turbo's etc etc.

Managed to find a similar pic of the hardpipes and turbo's from the net that i've attached.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Have a look at the front of one (prob the front one) and see what is stamped on it. HKS have a big HKS on them (see pic) and std turbos have Garrett on them. Bit harder to tell if they are N1's or Std turbos....They both run 0.48 front housings, GrpA turbos have 0.64 housings. (IIRC)

It won't be definitive, but if the actuators have HKS on they may well be gtss (actuators are easier to see without removing stuff)

HKS GTRS`s have Garret stamped on them but they also have a metal plaque on the top (when fitted) stating the model

if only it was that simple
not all GT-SS's have HKS stamped on them.

Here are my GT-SS's.

I will try to find the code on the turbos, i have it written down somewhere.

They will have a .64 ar exhaust housing. Mine say GARRETT M24 on the front intake housing.
There is a plate on the middle of the turbo, again will find out what it says.
They will also have HKS stamped wastegates.

Hope this helps

Chris

edit: plaque says:

we had a look today and there are no markings of HKS anywhere, not even on actuators etc. They have garrett written on them - if not stock, then what other options are there?

Many Thanks again.

Personally G40tee I don't think you have HKS turbos there.

HKS Turbos will have HKS on the little plaque, And all that I have seen have had the HKS raised logo on the compressor housing and the exaust.

You might find if those turbos were already on you car when you got it, the previous owner might have had HKS ones and having had one fail, has replased them with the garrett equiv, and bolted the better HKS exaust housing on them.
I did this with my new GT2860-5's

Sorry....I retract my previous comments.

After looking about it appears the GT-SS's are a little different to the 2530 and 2540's, and still run Garrett compressor housings.

.....does make working out if they are HKS's difficult without removing them!

lol i had the same thing when i bought them, they are definately Gt-SS's it is a mission to check what they are without removing them!
but that code i have on the plaque is definately the right one for the hks variants.

HKS GT-SS don't have any HKS logo on turbine itself but GT-SS comes with HKS actuator STD(not like GT2530/40 that don't comes with actuator) so if you see that "square" shape on compressor housing it will be either of

1. HKS GT-SS (should always have HKS actuator)
2. R34 N1 (usually have N1 adjustable actuator)
3. some of GT2540 (slightly bigger sized)
4. NISMO LE-MAN (few different types, usually looks old/used)

Personally "Garrett" writing or FONT on compressor housing of GT-SS and N1 seems to have sharper edge and deep style charactor compare to other.

Other good thing about GT-SS is that actuator have date/month of manufacture which sometimes gives idea when the turbine is installed.(picture of G40tee: build date 2002 Dec)

When R34N1 have HKS actuator, it will be hard to identify but I would say they are similar enough to get mixed up with GT-SS both looks and performance wise.
