Loose steering rack? Wobbles

Hi,

I failed an MOT a few weeks ago due to excessive movement of the steering rack. At the time it looked like worn bushes as the drivers side bush looked perished and was falling apart. Ordered a pair of new bushes and fitted them, however when we replaced the bush, the core looked fine. Fitted the new ones anyway and went for the retest today and the problem is still there!

As you "wobble" the steering wheel left-right, the entire steering rack moves with it - looks like the bushes are just there for the ride, not actually doing anything. The whole rack moves about an inch either way.

Is this normal for a GTR (early spec R33) or is there a fault with the rack? Everything looks good - bushes seated correctly, all bolts tight.

Thanks for any help on this

Regards
Tim

btw, he has passed me today with an advisory notice so at least I'm back on the road.
