re-laquering Split rims
Hi guys, i have just received some second hand split rims and the lacquer has gone white in places and like a spiders web in others,
does anyone have any experience of doing a DIY re-furb as im looking to do mine over the next week, i spoke to a mate who does spraying and he said not to use sand paper of a higher grade than 180 and to do them in stages any help is greatly appreciated lads here are the alloys ![]() |

I progressively used the following to remove kerb damage and crap lacquer and mine are pretty damn shiny now!
Big file Little file 120 grade wet & dry 240 grade 1200 grade Autoglym metal polish Haven't bothered re-lacquering yet, I re-do with metal polish once in a while. |

I have a BM with BBS 17" split rims that is suffering much the same thing. Bloke on E36 forum did a decent write up...same sort of principal
Ironically, after reading his article some time ago and thinking of doing the same to mine his car was written off so I've actually bought the wheels he did (a bargain at 350 with nearly new contisports) • refurb

The other option is the more expensive way which I did on my GTR Blitz rims. Diamond cut was the cheapest but I was informed the laquer wouldn't really adhear to them. Then you have machine polishing which is good but requires mucho care with wax and the occasional polish. I had them machine polished and then some ceramic coating over the top which BKV engineering (a few people recommend) explained was a relatively new process but lasted much longer. It was 95 a wheel which is a lot and I can't really gauge the durabablity as the car has only done about 1k since
Bolts need redoing and the center caps need skimming but I was pretty pleased...then again...they haven't seen any salt yet ![]()

well tbh, i have spent a lot on the car already so dont want to fork out another 3-400 quid on a refurb as i need a few more bits for the car,
i will have a go at the DIY method, worse comes to worse i will end up having them done professionally |

Hmmm, I supose theres no harm in a bit of DIY.
You should be able to split the alloys using 2 8mm or 10mm spanners. You will have to do this to get inbetween the bolts. I do hope you realise that it takes a long time to sand and polish up! Im sure the how too's will be a big help. |

Yep, I meant hand files - big one to take off "excess" metal from kerbing damage, smaller one to blend the kerbing dinge into the rim. 120 grade wet & dry will then take out the file marks. You'll be amazed at the results you can get from fairly seriously damaged wheels.
