Mandatory DRL in Europe from 2011

EU announces plan for mandatory daytime running lights by 2011 - [Mandatory DRLs by 2011] - MotorAuthority - Car news, reviews, spy shots

Will be interesting to see how Nissan will work these into the GTR. I hope they wont use the cheesy looking ones they use here in Japan. Talk about an afterthought!

Nissan....look at Audi!

It's already a requirement in Canada. My GT-R has a DRL module for the headlamps that simply dims the High Beams

It´s been mandatory in Sweden for many years so it will be implemented on the cars sold here.

Yep, its total b0ll0cks! Governments moan about pollution by cars then bring in stupid laws which will increase their co2 emissions by millions of tonnes a year! F*cking mental!

Next they'll be telling us we have to have our windscreen wipers on at all times to defend our line of sight against unexpected dollops of mess distraction from passing pigeons

They are very bright, and definitely apparent on a summers day. The Audi's over here, demonstrate that clearly!

Benji,

You're absolutely right. Here in Canada motorcyclists complain vehemently that cars with DRL take away from motorcyclist visibility as they were previously the only vehicles on the road with DRLs. When I'd see beams ahead or behind me during the day, I used to know they were motorcyclist and hence paid a bit more attention to my blind spots.

I believe that the Japanese regulations mean that LED DRLs are not permissable?

I think it's a good thing but I've grown up with this as I live in Sweden. At a quick glance you can tell which cars are mobile or about to be and which are stationary.

If you get blinded in broad daylight by a cars lowbeam you need to stop sitting around on the ground staring straight into the bulb

I can't see any problem with this rule unless you're a stalker and want to sneak around on unlit roads with the lights off.

Never understood the point in DRL. What's the point in making them mandatory?
