Hi I am putting together a dry sump system. I can fabricate all the bits needed no probs and make the sump but has anyone got any tips or downfalls they have encountered?

Mick that would be good. I want to save as much as possible by making it all myself apart from the pump (although I have made a power steering pump before but I dont want to take chances with my engine). My email address is ash.theskylinenutter@googlemail.com. Thanks alot Mick. Very nice of you mate.

I've built a wet sump with everything I can think of - Tomei oil pump, Trust extended sump, Canton Accusump, sump baffles, cam cover baffles, Nismo oil separator, Trust oil cooler...the entire system takes ten liters of oil. I seriously hope that's enough to never spin a bearing!!!
If I had been starting from scratch however, I'd build a dry sump. Why not? |

Only tip would be to scavenge the head. I did this on my Toyota 4-AGE Formula Atlantic engine, as they suffer excess oil retention upstairs. Pics at Index of /scavenge
(Can you post pics here, if so, how, please?) The drain is the welded in pipe in the RH rear corner of the head casting, it has its own scavenge section on the pump. If i was going to dry sump my RB engine I'd do something similar, it woks fine on the 4-AGE. In fact I am going to turbo it soon, and may share this scavenge section with the ball bearing turbo so I can get it very low in the chassis. |

I think if I were doing an RB26 dry sump set up I'd be tempted to keep the stock pressure pump and just run external scavenge stages, to keep the external stuff small, and plumbing to a minimum. hell, there isn't much room around the bottom of a GTR engine and front transmission, is there?
It might save some valuable space? I can't see many car owners that need a dry sump being too worried about losing air con, especially in the UK. |

Air con??? Whats that??? I junked mine years ago along with all the interior the rear steering the glass sound proofing etc etc. Now it gets so hot inside I have to drive it in my pants!!
I have decided to just give the job to Gary at GTart. His system is reliable and I am still going to fabricate the sump etc but to his design which will save me a couple of quid. Seems the easiest way as I have kids full time to look after. As for driving in my pants I think I might put the blower unit back in! (and no thats not the name I use for my girlfriend!) |
