You can have a paint finish that looks like anodisation ... powdercoating will create a very strong finish (but if they get damaged - it is a pig to redo them).
I had my volks redone with waterbased paints and they seem to be lasting perfectly - I don't use any cleaning products on them, simply clean them whenever I get a chance with water and then wax.
