Wheels advice

Hi.
My stagea has the original wheels on it. I need to remove 13 years worth of brake dust in all the creases and corners which wont come out with a sponge and elbow grease and then I need to restore, clean and protect a polished lip which is now showing signs of corrosion. I want to do this with the least amount of effort possible but it'll have to be done by hand. I'm looking for good results, not factory finish as they'd need a refurb for that! I just want them to look clean and tidy unless you get your face in them

This is what the wheels are like.

What would you recommend?
Cheers

I'll tell her you said that LoL. I can't even get her to drive these days, going near a car with a bucket and sponge....pffft, you have to be joking

Will that gear get all the baked on brake dust off or will I need some sort of wonder wheels acidic cleaner? Need to get them clean first

You could use what Matty has suggested..

Or perhaps use an all purpose cleaner, which you could dilute with water to your preference or use neat. Let the stuff do its thing for a few minutes and agitate with a soft bristle brush.. Repeat this process if necessary until desired finish has been achieved.

Rinse thoroughly and once dried, it might be an idea to add a coat or two of something like Poorboy's Wheel sealant; which would make future cleaning that much easier.

P21S Wheel Cleaning Gel might be a good place to start.

It's not abrasive so you can let it sit on the wheel without worrying about etching.

Sorry for the late reply...

The P21S Gel is very good as I used to sell it but it isn't great value for money as it doesn't dilute. As Matt says in the first post, if theres an unlaquered polished lip involved I'd go with the Finish Kare 817 Sparkle Plenty. It's Ph neutral so like the P21S won't stain or etch any type of wheel and will be as kind as anything can be but still has good cleaning power.

I'd couple this with a very light metal polish to give the lips a bit of TLC now and then... Something like Meguiars NXT or Finish Kare Metal Polish... Both will polish and protect so will help the cause. The only other thing to do is if you wax or seal the car, do the same to the wheels at the same time. It won't stop the dirt sticking but will make future cleaning easier.

Hope that helps .

OK thanks for the advice
Out of interest you say you give a 10% discount to GTROC Members. Do you give the same to Stagea OC members even though our club is new and we haven't had our membership cards etc? I have paid my subs to them, want to purchase some products off you but want a discount too
I had a good hunt around your site, found at least 3 products I want to order now, about 20 I'll be putting on Birthday pressie lists, and want to place an order. If the discount applies where does that "get done"? At checkout?
Should I just PM an order to you?
Cheers

On the subject of wheels. Is there a product you can use to provide a protective film when clean so that brake dust doesn't stick? I have heard of spraying your wheels with cheap hairspray to do this. I have some TE37's to put on but don't want to be cleaning them all the time to prevent the dust from getting embedded in the pitted finish these alloys have.

Hi Rude Dog,

Just go through the main site... We stopped all the discount schemes about 3 years ago now in favour of just lowering prices in general... It also got way to messy with the different clubs and different rates etc. If you want to drop me a pm with what you want I'll go through it to make sure it's exactly what your after .

Nice one Matty, let me know how you get on

Psst - The best thing to use to protect the wheels is a paint sealant. Something like Finish Kare 1000P Hi-Temp Sealant (back in stock Monday) or Poorboys Wheel Sealant are ideal, although as a quick fix any decent sealant will do (wax degrades under heat much faster so isnt really as suitable).
This won't stop the dust settling on the wheels but will certainly help. it will also make cleaning them alot easier and you shouldn't find it as tough to clean off.

Cheers .
