Extended Warranty Option

Hi all. When i purchased a used Prodrive Impreza some time ago ,I took the option of extending the manufacturers warranty period for an extra two years.Subaru were very confident in ther product and for a small fee (i think around £400.00) I had complete peace of mind in my 4yrs of ownership.

Do any of you think that Nissan will be offering this option on the R35 and what would the likely costs be if they did?

I suppose what i am concerned about is that after the initial warranty period runs out on this vehicle will it be so costly to fix that it will have a huge impact on a) Insurance ,and more importantly b) RESIDUALS.

They did offer this on the Z to extend the three year period *but* only if the vehicle wasn't up to the mileage element of the warranty....... ISTR it was available right up to the three year deadline.....

Am waiting to find out if the transmission is warrantied for 5 years as per the USA as there is nothing in the draft warranty document about it.

Seems to be another Nissan Europe unknown...

I expect it would be covered under statutory rights if not under the warranty as long as it would reasonably be expected to last over 5 years.

Every Porsche I've owned I've added additional years of warranty. Just needs an inspection by a tech at an OPC, then they take around £1000 off you. The warranty used to be very good, but in the later years (say 2 years ago) they tried to wriggle out of paying up sometimes...

If you think Nissan is going to be funny, try getting your RMS replaced on a Boxster S even after its failed 3 times in 3 years and been replaced!

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and torque is how far you take the wall with you.

Apparently extended warranties will be offered, but not until Nissan has had some time to gauge the amount and type of warranty claims it is likely to receive. With this information they will set the price accordingly.

Yes indeedy! I've posted before about my problems with my OPC. The stealership changed hands and moved locations. After that they were utter pigs when it came to service and warranty stuff.

This is why I drive a Merc at the moment and will probably never buy another Porsche.

My first problem was when my driver's side mirror wouldnt defrost. When it went in for a service I asked about having it replaced under warranty. No problems they said. Except when I picked the car up and they said they'd checked the mirror (it was fine apparently) and that they'd tried tracing the wiring to see if there was a break, and couldnt find it. As a result they expected me to pay for 8 hours labour as my expensive warranty only pays up IF they find a part to replace. Total bill over £1000 and I still had an unworking mirror. Nice eh?

And the best bit of that entire episode....

Service hadnt been done, and they'd replaced 3 week old wiper blades as they were "worn." On top of that they wanted to replace the RMS again, which had lasted less than 12 months since they'd replaced it the year before! Total cost for that...around £900+

After that, my Boxster was sold 3 weeks later, and 2 years on I'm still waiting for their service manager to call me back regarding a claim with Porsche GB for the RMS.

I paid two years running for an extended warranty on my 911 and it was a waste of money.

After taking the car in for each service they gave me an estimate listing a range of 'problems' and amazingly not one single part was covered by the warranty, we're talking 2 grand bills here.
Some parts they wanted to replace (as with Charlie above) didn't need replacing, some were marginal and others you would only change if you were entering the car into a show!
They also wanted to repace both rear tyres as their mechanic said they were "very low on tread" and these worn tyres had been fitted BRAND NEW only two days before!

It will be many years before i trust a main dealership again, i will check everything they say they've replaced, worked on, etc and wouldn't consider taking out a warranty.

My Porker is now looked after by Red Line Racing in Stockton who run 911's in the supercup, there's nothing they don't know about this car and i can't recommend them highly enough.

I'd consider another Porsche but after the initial warranty had run out i'd be straight off to an independant.

I have a 911 too. A 997 C2S.

It has had two faults. The satnav crashed meaning a complete new PCM console (I believe thats about £4500). And a clutch seal (Around £900).

The first ISN'T covered by the extended warranty, and the second occurred at 25 months (just out of standard warranty).

In attack against Porsche, how can they offer a mere 2 year warranty on a 911. What faith is that in their product?

I did buy my 3rd year warranty, but as the GT-R is coming I don't need the fourth year :-)

...Mad

Glad i had it on my Audi A8 - turned out to have a porous block which they replaced under the extended warranty or it would have been over 13k inclusive of the hire car they gave me for almost 2 months.
