Talking MeisterR R32 Demo Car Rebuild (New 88HTA Turbo + Head Work)

After a bit of fun and testing for MeisterR at the RAF Marham Track Day in October 08...
It seems that I have kills the engine and require a new head...

From This:

To This:

The GTR was making good power, and everything was spot on before the day at Marham as seen on the Dyno.

So I took it to I.A. Motorsport in Sittingbourne, Kent for Ian to have a look and see what is the problem.
And it looks like the head is warp and need replacing, so we took the opportunity to do some upgrade while we are at it.

We wanted to do something different and see what difference it will make, along with some documentation and dyno.
We decided to get a "New" used head, match port both the inlet and exhaust port, along with taking out the squish pad on both the intake and exhaust side to lower the compression.
New Tomei gasket kit and redo all the valve guide seal on the head. This should improve flow and give us a little extra power.

For the power side, we decided to ditch the OLD T45S turbo that should have stay on the Titanic instead of being use in the modern 21st century.
The T45S was one of the first single turbo that HKS made using off the shelf Garrett DIESEL Turbo parts!!!

The obvious choice of replacement was the Garrett GT4088R, but then there are a few GTR using it already and it just doesn't seem adventurous enough.
Instead, we went for a Forced Performanced 88HTA Turbo because it seems to be do well on the EVOs, and because no one is using it.

So off to work we went!!!

Here is the old engine in the bay looking sad.

Old Turbo OFF...

... And the Head Off....

You can see that the old head had its squish pad on the intake side removed (not very well), and also retain the exhaust side squish pad.

So we got our "New" Used Head here....

And after some work.... clean, smooth, and shiny.

Match ported the intake side...

And added a lick of paint.

The new Forced Performanced 88HTA Turbo with its Billet Wheel and Tial Ported Shroud Cover.

New Turbo on the left, Old Turbo on the Right.
You can see the size difference, and the smaller turbo actually flows more!

So now the head is back on the bottom end... torqued down and ready for the turbo.

I hope to get it back running within the next few weeks and bring some dyno numbers up.

Great thread mate - I have always liked your 32 I would be very interested to look at your new dyno plots to see what difference it makes. When did the old turbo start to spool and when do you expect the new one to start to produce boost?

Yes, it will be interesting especially to see what simple match porting will do.
Also running much lower compression now, I think the 2 squish area equal to 2cc of compression chamber. What that mean in compression ratio, I have no idea.
But I would like to be able to run 1.8bar - 2.0bar safely... so lowering static compression is one way to do it.

There have been lots of debate about the squish pad, so it will be nice to see some actual result from this...

As for the turbo, my old T45S is useless. You can see the boost curve of it on the second dyno graph... 1.8bar comes AFTER 6000rpm!!!

I am expecting the 88HTA turbo to make full boost in the region of 4500rpm, and that way I will still have a good chunk of power band, and should give plenty of torque also.

The 88HTA turbo should do very well, the only problem with it was it took almost 4 MONTHS for the turbo to be build by them.

I hope it will be well worth the wait.

I bet it will be, then go and tear up the streets JLo! (after checking coolant levels )

Don't feel bad, I didn't check my oil for three months and found 2 liters missing! If I didn't have my Accusump I'd have had oil starvation for sure!

But I always checked my coolant after you visited Seoul - I'm so clever yet so dumb (oil is important too!)

Whatcha got cookin' with your SC430? Other than smuggling children? Did you get wheels and suspension done yet? Any planned engine mods?

On a general note about overheating, I don't fully trust coolant temp readouts because what if there's a coolant blockage or an air pocket or god knows what? When I first rebuilt my engine I actually looked into CHT gauges (cylinder head temp), but the sensors are really only designed to be used with air-cooled engines designed to take a flat sensor sandwiched between the head and block. The best I could get would be block temp, but I wanted to be able to directly read temperature inside the head. Oh well.

Very nice, I am contemplating removing the squish part on the intake for my RB25 and my RB26. Is it recommended as a DIYer or not?

DIY the squish pads as long as you know what your doing. Its quite straight forward really.

the dremel part is easy. Making sure you've got exactly the same combustion chamber volume across all six can get tedious!

Very cool - this will be interesting to see. Are you using a divided turbine housing?

I know, talk about learning the hard and expensive way.
I now have a water temp sensor also just incase.

Plans for the SC430...? It is going to get pimped up.
I got MeisterR Suspension developing for SC430, a set of Works 20" chrome alloys, a widebody kit, and a custom made stroker kit. More details on that when work actually start.

Yep, Divided T4 with 1.00 A/R, should spool well enough and be able to support around 700 bhp with sensible boost.

I still don't understand how some of the EVO can run 42psi (2.9Bar)!!!!
That is just silly amount of boost!!!
