Gaz,

No, I haven't cos I always use axle stands (cough. cough).... Seriously though, I do use them when a wheel or wheels are off for any length of time or if I'm likely to have to use force with anything but, if I'm honest, I don't use them when working on my brakes. Bad habit I guess as of course they should be used.

Stop showing off Jason.

Peter.

If you don't use it for a week you will find that they will turn from red back to pink.

I usually find that over use makes mine go red.

Changings Pads

Could someone please tell me how on earth I get the rear calipers off, there are 2 places where I can use a phillips screwdriver, 4 places where I can use the wrence and get them undone and anoother 2 places where i need to use a bigger socket to get the screws out, I would of thought its the biggest socket but I cant get mine in there!!

Help as the car is on the Jack at the moment,

Cheers

The caliper doesn't need to come off, remove the retainer wire spring from the pins, then pull the pins through the caliper.

Very similar to the fronts.

Once you've got the little wire retainer spring out of the pins, put a screw driver in them and give them a couple of turns, then grip the head with your pliers and press the anti-rattle spring in towards the pads with one hand, then pull.

You've got a PM with my phone number if you get stuck

He doesn't need to remove the disks

.......but I've never had any problems getting reluctant ones to move, eventually they all sucumb to the the power of a hacksaw, chisel and big hammer.....

Bigger the job, bigger the hammer

Yeah i know mate, just mentioned seeing as we were on the brake subject.

Can remember when i tried to get the rear discs off when i was doing the brembo upgrade at the rear, hammer, kicking it from behind, all sorts of things! In the end i gave up and got the missus to ring are good friend Rod and he explained all! All that was needed was a bolt to put through the thread area in the discs face and then pull of the hub, simple as that!

Same goes for the front aswell, total mare but as with anything always easy when u know how or have the tools!

Sure, using the jack bolt is a clever enough little trick, but not all disks are created equal, and you only notice they were £10 cheaper when you want to get them off and they don't have any jack screw holes.

My method, although brutal, is very quick.......Cut about 3/4" through the disk with your hacksaw (it's cast steel and cuts really easy) then place your cold chisel into the cut, and wallop (technical measure of applied force) it with your big hammer, the disk splits in two, and you'll make the pub before last shout
