Engineering/machining company - recommendations ?
Hi all,
Can anyone recommend a good engineering company who can perform re-bores, balancing and other general engine machining ? Preferably in the South east ? Have used Oselli in the past but would rather not in the future so who else do people use ? No 'Take it to Abbey' or 'TR are the daddies' answers please.

Bit of travelling but...
I went to Robinson Engineering - Hants and Dorset. They live and breathe engines. They carried out all my engine engineering work. They did the crank grinding as well as crack testing and balancing, the block pressure testing (for porosity) and the skimming of the deck and the relining/reboring (plateau honed) and the whole block dipped.
Luckily they're my mech's choice anyway but apparently they've got a major truck contract (Skania I think) as well as an MOD contract and are permanently busy which I reckon is all the proof needed. All of the above = ~£1500 including sending the crank for re-nitriding. They will collect within 50mile which isn't quite W Sussex but at least I didn't give you the usual responses . Finally (and giving you a usual response anyway) Rising Sun Performance isn't too far from you presumably and they've got a great rep...and that is probably where I'll get my final map done after running in.Happy hunting Jen |

Thanks mate. I'll get some prices from them.
![]() I had a feeling that posting this sort of question would draw very little response. I'm amazed at how un-involved Skyline owners seem to be with their engine re-builds. Guess they must believe that RB's are magical things that only the specialists can work on or maybe they're very rich....at least before they give it to someone to re-build for them anyway ![]()

Stu,
We use a company in Edenbridge for boring , balancing. But they are unable to grind cranks. Which we use another company in Croydon. But 1 thing that most engineering companies wont have is a stress plate for the RB series motors, which I feel is definitely needed to provide good clearances when boring motors.

Not uninterested
Skyline owners are a very interested crowd in the main. Some of these guys, and there's plenty of threads to document it, will think nothing of dropping their engine out themselves on a whim in a morning because they can. I do think ownership types has changed massively with prices reaching the same level for a 32/33GT-R as a new Matiz etc. This changes the dynamic of the type of owner as well as factoring the age of the cars, not everyone will be able to spend on the upkeep and so they simply don't.
I couldn't say for sure whether Robinsons used a stress plate to do the bore. I wonder if anyone has any measurements of the bore change due to the use of a stress plate, and what the variation is to when clamped by the head. Does the cast iron block alter that much under compression? I do know I'll be running mine in using the "hard driving technique" to ensure my rings/barrell interface are as tight as can be. KR Jen |

I used Gardias Engine Services Ltd in oxfordshire. They honed/plateau/decked the block, and inline bored the cam bearing. Very good service, and reasonable prices too.

I can vouch for the Abbey Motorsport route when it comes to boring.
They did mine for a very reasonable price, and the peace of mind knowing a stress plate was used makes it the only way to go. |
