What's standard security on R34?
Hi, just got an R34 with a standard Nissan key which has lock/unlock buttons for the central locking. Does anyone know if there will be an alarm and immob too? And if so (though I guess unlikely) will it satisfy Thatcham cat 1?
Thanks.

OK - thanks. I got a toad fitted anyway but I want a spare key too. Will Nissan main dealer be able to do me one? Doesn't matter if it doesn't have the buttons but will it need to be coded to the factory immobiliser? If not I'd rather just get a key cutting place to do it.

even if it's not, with my old lexus i went down to the dealership with the log book, they took the chassis number and had a new key for me within 3 days,so defo give Middlehurt a call as they'll be the best when it comes to R33 & R34's dealership wise since they've done them for so long

Cool - thanks guys it is an import but sounds like Middlehurst would be able to help but would any Nissan dealer? Or are Middlehurst extra special?

Try your local Nissan dealer and see what they say. Be warned though, I find the dealers a bit hit or miss. My local dealer is about as useful as a chocolate tea pot when it comes to anything Skyline- in fact they're worse than useless.

I have been told that the import R34GTRs have a coded key (is there a red tab on your key end? That's the bit), but the UK R34s actually use a modified R33GTR ECU and hence any key will start it (i.e. you could get one cut).

I'm hoping a standard key cut place will do the job then. Local place is getting some blanks to try it. Seemed better to risk 8 quid then try Nissan if it doesn't work.

If you read me again, what I am saying is if your car is an import (which it is) it will have a chip in your key, and you won't be able to get any old one to start it.
UNLESS you have an aftermarket ECU.

Aha - gotcha now. There's no red tab and no aftermarket ECU that I'm aware of. Two different key cutting shops have said different things when they tested it for a chip. One shop's machine said there is a chip and the other guy said his machine couldn't detect it but there probably is one. So evidence is definitely pointing at going to see if Nissan can do it.
Cheers.
