EBC - ORANGESTUFF Brake Pads - Review / Test

Leading on from the poor results produced by Bluestuff NDX on the GTR.

Orangestuff has now arrived :

Due for launch in October 2011 is the new full race material code named EBC Orangestuff. Here is a basic preview of what the new material will do.

Friction level - 0.5 rising to 0.6 under load
Material base - semi-metallic
Target use - closed circuit racing only
R90 Approval - Will not be tested to R90

Following on from the huge success of the new EBC Bluestuff NDX range, customer demand has indicated the need for a more aggressive full race material for track only use that is not required to bring a vehicle to rest (which Bluestuff NDX was specifically designed to do) and this has led to the development of the orange grade material. The material will be dusty and slightly more aggressive on brake rotors which is the trade off when using a full race pad and cannot be avoided.

The range of pads available in Orangestuff will be announced soon but similar to the Bluestuff NDX range and available for all faster street based caliper designs and aftermarket race calipers.

If you wish to drive your car to the track and race it, you CANNOT use Orangestuff. It is not European street legal or safe and likely never will be ECE R 90 street legal .Even in countries where there is no such consideration of ECE R 90 (a European brake safety regulation) Orange grade is NOT designed for highway style driving and is more designed to scrub off speed on track use. Orange is a TRACK ONLY MATERIAL.

On the contrary Bluestuff is a material capable of track use on most vehicles and is now also street legal. The different in the compounds is immense. Bluestuff may work great on better designed calipers on the track but the fastest cars on STREET design calipers may push blue beyond its limits due to reduced cooling, reduced pad release and smaller rotor diameters associated with a standard set up.

Ok so having done the Adsa day last week I cracked my front discs and will be replacing with some AP***8217;s and XP12***8217;s but as the Orange Stuff pads arrived today and I was at a loose end I thought I would stick them in and see what they are like***8230;.fair play to EBC for sending out more pads to test and having given up on the NDX ones, without fitting after Chris experience with them , I thought I owed it to EBC to fit these and give them a go.

First off here***8217;s a couple of pics of the front pads that came out. Now given my car has never seen a track and has only done 4500 miles I am pretty appalled that after one day where I did about 10 laps with quite hard stops down from 170mph could do this to the front pads. Come on Nissan sort it out***8230;you build a car that will top 190mph and stick in s*&t pads that can***8217;t cope with any more than a couple of hard stops from less than the advertised top speeds

Not a great picture but front pads in and seem to be a good fit and will sweep the whole disc***8230;backing plate also straight into the calliper no problem.

So having got all 4 corners done I took the car out for a quick spin to get some first impressions. I decided to do a few miles with light pressure on the brakes just to settle them in a bit and then worked up to some medium speed, medium brake pedal pressure, stops with some good initial results.

The car pulls up very quickly and I got the impression at that point that the pads like a bit of heat as the first few stops were good but the effort became less to achieve the same result on the 3rd and 4th pedal applications.

Having made myself feel a bit sick with all the stop / start I decided to do a couple of faster stops and harder pedal pressure. The results again were good and they certainly seem to slow the car up very quickly with the MFD showing consistently over 1G of deceleration on each stop with no noticeable fade. I was getting the ABS kicking in no problem on demand and modulating the pedal pressure (thanks CADT) to prevent it after that.

One thing I have noticed immediately is the dust, smell and heat. Every time I am harder on the pedal there is a trail of smoke out the back of the car***8230;.a bit like running on my high boost map with the puff of black smoke out the rear under hard acceleration. The smell after a few pedal applications confirms that they are working very hard and my wheels have never been so hot!

I will get out tomorrow if it***8217;s dry and do a few runs and get some pictures up of the MFD. I can certainly confirm at this point that they feel way better than the stock pads and the bite is there but as above I think they like a bit of heat to really start working.....thumbs up so far but given they are a track use only pad i would expect them to be good at this point with some light road pressure.

Thumbs up

Nice report. So far, so good. Sounds promising that your getting consistent 1g with threshold braking during bed-in.

Assume you're following the EBC performance pad bed-in rule: Keep doing hard stops until the smoking stops?

Looking forward to the next report.

Yeah it does look better than the NDX's. I have done probably 20 stops with varying pedal pressure and the smoking was dying down when I came home. Hard to know what the exact bed in process should be for these and I would assume given they are a race only pad that they should be good to go right out the box pretty much.

Will do a few more stops and some high speed ones and get some traces from the MFD and see what the score is.

Excellent - initially sounds way more promising than the Bluestuff.

That's good to know, but a bit of a shame they're not road legal as a real pita to swap pads out at a track.

Away from home so no idea if a set of Oranges has arrived but will certainly try them if I do a fairly local track day.

Paul are you coming to the MH Track Day on the 30th August at Oulton Park?

You could try them out there.

I have to admit to not being that clued up on the R90 certification but can only assume that some pads won't get certificate as they perform way in excess of the OEM pads...is it something like no more than 15% better stopping power? To stop the poor bugger behind ploughing through the back of you if you hit the anchors hard?

Agreed on this Stevie, I use RS29 Pagids and they are not R rated either but stop just fine

Quick update on the Orange Stuff. Managed to get out to play for 30 mins just before lunch today and take a few pics of the MFD.

The pads having cooled last night performed better than they did immediately after fitting so they definitely do need a bit of running in. I covered roughly 15 miles with normal road use braking down as normal from the signed speed limits on 50mph / 60mph roads. All felt good but again as per last night I think they need a bit of heat as the first few applications are good but you do notice improved braking force after a few applications of the brake pedal.

So having assured myself that all was well I went and found a ***8216;private road***8217; and had a few higher speed, higher force, pedal applications. I think the pads performed really well to be honest. Couple of pics below of the MFD traces which show that the pads were able to sustain 1.1g of force through until the car came to a complete stop. The fluttering on the trace being the ABS trying to kick in. I did about 6/7 higher speed runs and did not notice any difference in the way the car pulled itself up so it would appear they can take several hard applications without complaint.

I will do a few more runs perhaps tomorrow if I can and stick another update on. Hopefully get on the pedal harder quicker if i can get on a better surface. Was having a few ABS moments hitting the pedal so hard initially which can only be a good thing showing the initial bite they have. Good news for EBC though is that these really do seem to work!

Will be interesting to compare against the Carbotech's although I will have the AP's on for that too which might skew the comparison slightly.

Wink

Great stuff. Now that's a bit more like it.

Be interesting to see how Orangies wear the discs too... ... but stopping without excessive heat fade is the name of the game. Well done EBC

Still doing my last bit of due diligence w.r.t. to a datalogger/video kit. Then I fancy giving the NDXs a more brutal bed-in on the smoking front and see if they work any better too. Looking at hooking up a thermocouple too But for Chris's review, I would have tried the NDXs for Brunters, but decided to play it safe with the paying public on board @174mph indicated! RS29s coped with little fade, but my wheels were veritable furnaces... & my Motul 5.1dot worked for a living; had my fire extinguisher at the ready, just in case

I don't think I would bother with the NDX's as Chris follow the bed in to the letter and they were really poor. These seem to be in a different league....my car will be coming off the road for the winter in Oct so will see if I can make the STD front discs hold out for VMAX in Sept if I can get a place and then swap over during the winter to the AP's and carbotechs. Would be happy running these at 200mph right now with a couple of decent pedal applications before hand to heat them up a little.

Only had time for a quick spin out today and was in the car myself so no pics but results were the same as yesterday with the car pulling up consistently from 'higher' speeds sustaining +1g. I am going to leave these in until the front discs are totally gone as I am more than happy with how they are performing on the road under what I would consider to be fast road pace. Would be good for one of the other testers to stick them in and ratify my results and perhaps get some track feedback.

Good work fella and also looking good for EBC after the poor performance of the blues. Incidentally took mine out today to finish off the bedding in procedure of the XP12`s......wow is an understatement !

Cant wait to compare the two.

Yeah need to sort out a comparison braking session at some point soon.

I can't wait to get the AP's and XP12's on...how are they dust wise? The orange stuff are quite dusty...my wheels don't stay clean long.
