You can just see in that photo the bodywork underneath the radiator/intercooler had really started to suffer.

Rust now cleaned up. Underseal being applied today.
is it me or have they just left you calipers hanging around ? normal practice is to support them .

i know the pipes and connections are stronger than what alot of people think but even still ..........

Yeah, that's a bit weird, you're right they should support those or remove them completely to avoid damage really.
Are you getting the brackets in the pics zinc coated or powder coated Toni?
Keep the pics coming.

You can't see it but the brackets are actually zip tied to the chassis!

They're coming off to be refurbed as well, but apparently there is some reluctance on the part of some refurbishers to repaint them so it's being looked into.

I think most brackets will be zinc coated now.

You've done the right thing there though Toni if you intend to keep the car, i know i went through this process a year ago, i to think I was lucky enough to catch it in time! Ironic as one of the plus points about purchaseing my 34 was the underseal had already been done! Lol! Just make double sure you treat all the box sections and seams, also pull the interior door panles of front and rear and check under the carpet! make sure you POR all, another tip is to pull the sill plates off and complete the 3 step POR process by pouring the products in to the sill one at a time and then go for a spirited drive to distribute the product!

Clive you will most likely need to go at the old tar with an angle grinder with a sanding disk attached, also please steer away from the Hamerright paint POR 15 actually chemicaly bonds to the corodid metal beter with out the Krust layer! The Dintrol products are quite handy for squrting into to any box section and there is a thicker underseal spray that can be applied over the POR 15 inside the wheel arches and chassie rails, etc.

Also don't forget the engine bay, even if your strut tops are ok check with a mirror under the scutel panel behind the wipper motor etc. and under the plastic window trim.

Good luck

I already treated under the washer bottle/wiper motors, noticed it about a year ago rust developing under there! Definitely a hot spot on R34s I suspect.

The cost is getting ever higher, but this car will probably outlast me now.

One of the advantages to mine having had so much work over the years is it's spent months on ramps and usually over winters, and most of it has been apart loads of times. There would be very few if any rusty bolts as they have all been undone so often. I've constantly kept an eye on it and treated it with waxoyl, wd40 and spraygrease and re-painted brackets and bits and pieces when they have been off throughout the last 7 years... I've especially also kept an eye on and treated jacking points, under the strut tops and inside the rear arches between the skins and inside the doors.

Well done for catching it now Toni once it's done you will need to do the above to keep it tip top.

Wow, good you caught it all in time, none of mine have been undersealed and they've all been mint underneath. Is there something to be said for leaving it open to air?

My R33 GTS-T is 18 years old, as was my old 32 when I owned it, and the 34 was also mint. I don't drive them in the winter really, certainly not when there's salt on the road and they were garaged.

I guess it was compounded in this instance by the crappy application that was done, more reason why you should take them to task. (Perhaps get Rogue to write a without prejudice report). Pity, but at least you'll have the comfort that its done properly this time. The rear undertray on the 34 and the front splitter bolts were always pretty rubbish though!!

I spoke/met the guys from Rogue Motorsport at the Autosport show funnily enough, when I mentioned owning a GTS they asked if I knew you and mentioned you'd had quite a bit done with the MR2's in the past.

Good luck with it all, last I heard my old 34 was residing in a heated, padded garage along with its owner

ps. Defo to the Nismo bonnet, like Terje though, I prefer the stock wings.

Cheers
Nito

Cheers guys. Yes everything is being thrown out of the garage (including my race car!) so my GTR will be snug when I get it back. I feel a bit aggrieved as I never drove it in winter myself! But it was a good 8 years old when I bought it I guess.

Rogue did tell me they spoke to a GTR chap so it was you then Nito. 'One or two' things to MR2s is right.

But you will have a 100% mint 34 and that is all that matters
