Laptop advice needed

Guys,
Sister in law wants a laptop. About £3-400. I am so out of touch these days. She only wants it for music, video, browsing etc.

So many specs to choose from, what is the best to go for memory and processor wise?

Are asus or acer any good? What about toshiba?

Any solid advice welcome

Mook

I was a toshiba man for years but recently i think they`ve jumped on the "cost saving" band wagon, theyre certainly not as solid as they used to be. Ive just brought an Acer and i think its great. I`d say for pics, vids and browsing, an i3 with 4gb ram should be fine. You`ll get one for that money.

I tend to have 2 laptops, one good one cheap... the cheap one is to do basically what your wanting and is normally around the £400 mark, and I normally use a Toshiba Satellite Pro for that job, The one i'm typing on now has done 4 years so far with no problems (it was about £350 from morrisons), When it (eventually) gets replaced I will be looking to Toshiba first.

You should have no probs with Asus, HP, Acer etc, They should all do what you want, It seems many of them now use the i3 with built in HD Graphics.

Have a look here, Laptops up to ***163;499 - Our Range of Laptop and Notebooks upto ***163;499 - CCL Computers

The Lenovo Ideapad looks quite nice for the money.

Acer 5742 Windows 7 Laptop LX.R4F02.337 - Acer Direct

4gb i5 decent battery, £429

Any input?

That should be fine for your application... See if you can get a look at one before ordering, Check out the quality of the case, screen and sound... The reason I say that is we use £2000 Dells for work, the build quality/performance is great but the sound is so poor you cant watch even youtube videos without a cringe. You cant really check sound, screen or build quality online.

agreed with marky there to. Go to a retailer and get someone to show you everything you want to test then go home and find it cheaper online

That HP Pavilion is looking like a strong contender for cheap general use laptop.

I bought a Dell from their reconditioned warehouse. I got 1 years warranty. I paid £380, it's the DELL Inspiron 1750. Great machine.
It's so good, I used it for this post...

Lenovo was bought out, they're not part of IBM anymore - still well made though

Asus are good, but their support is so appalling it makes Samsung look great!
Acer, not built too well, have seen 2 with fault charging sockets...

Dell factory deals on ebay usually come with 3 year next day warranty - so definitely worth looking at them
