Rebuild

Hi everyone while having my rb25 rebuilt with new pistons, rods, oil pump, water pump bearings ect is there anything else you would recommend doing to the block whilst it's stripped, the aim is for around 500hp

What about having the oil journals done, de stressing the block, balanced ect?

Thanks Paul

Going to get someone to build it don't know who yet leaving head standard apart from some mild cams so now just need to what people recommend on the block

What I don't want is some garage saying I need this and that doing when it's not really needed

deburr and polish up the inside of the block, all the casting marks and casting flakes sitting around. You can easily do this yourself after you pull and strip the motor with a die grinder and some carbide burrs.

You could also remove all the plugs in the block/head and crank if you have a hand drill and some skill using it, its not very hard to do. As above, remove the core plugs too. The more you can do, the less things the machineshop have to do and charge out.

Also what would you say is the hardest part about building the bottom end or is it pretty straight forward? As I may build it myself

Having a super clean area to assemble it all in and measuring everything accurately. That usually means having good tools and measuring equipment. Micrometers, dial bore gauges, dial indicator, vernier calipers and feeler gauges are the most common measuring tools you will use. Probably a good torque wrench and stretch gauge.

There should be no burrs or casting flakes present or sitting around!

I would suggest doing everything to he head you think you would ever want to do while it is already off. A the very least do your valve stem seals.

You should look inside a factory rb block along the walls and under the sump rails. There can be large casting ridges and flakes protruding from those places. In some blocks ive seen them as big as a 10 cent piece (AU) that you can snap off with your fingers.

You commonly use a carbide burr in your die grinder or a similiar tool to smooth out these casting imperfections.
