Portable Hard Drive into USB

Hi all,

Just wondering if instead of using USB sticks I could put a higher capacity portable hard drive into the centre glove box?

I ask because 32gb seems to be the max stick size and I have a bit more than that in terms of video files I'd like available.

Has anyone done this?

does it work and if so is there a size limit on the drive? Can you get solid state drives to do the same job?

Thanks in advance from a non computer nerd.

Adam

I think as the format is Fat32 your limit is 32gb no matter what you connect.

i've got a 320gb hd pluged into my ps3 thats formatted to fatt32 the only problem is you can't play films bigger than 4gb.
I had problems the other day formating to fatt32 on windows 7 as it isn't there, but found a very good program that works great..

None of my films is even close to 4gb. They are all 350mb max low res 42 mins episodes of my favourite series from tv, dexter, the west wing, south park, family guy etc.

For all that, when I tried to play them this morning, again all I got was unplayable file.

The file lists were there but despite being xvids, they did not play.

I'd really appreciate a definitive explanation as to what will play on there.

I've played this same file type from this same stick before.

I used xilisoft to create the files and a 32gb stick.

Err, no.

Fat32 supports up to 8Tb partition sizes!

Been a while since i looked at FAT32 in depth but its no where near that

Table 3.11 FAT32 Size Limits

Description
Limit

Maximum file size
2 32 - 1 bytes

Maximum volume size
32 GB (This is due to the Windows 2000 format utility. The maximum volume size that Windows 98 can create is 127.53 GB).

Files per volume
Approximately 4 million

Important

Windows 2000 can format new FAT32 volumes up to 32 GB in size but can mount larger volumes (for example, up to 127.53 GB and 4,177,918 clusters from a volume formatted with the limits of Windows 98). It is possible to mount volumes that exceed these limits, but doing so has not been tested and is not recommended.

I wasn't referring to the technical limitations rather the commonly excepted compatible size. 3rd party tools and OS recognition seems to warrant 32gb. Of course PS3 are sometimes the exception to the rule over NTFS.

I have tried larger hard drives but they didn't work, although I'm not sure what the maximum current draw allowed from this USB socket is ? it won't charge an Ipad from example.

I don't have any 64gb or larger solid state devices like USB sticks to try. In the end I purchased a 160gb Ipod which works perfectly.

Yep, what's your point?

Seriously, can someone tell me the exact video format I need, can't get it to work now.

DivX works fine, or you can use the open source Xvid version but you need to change the fourCC of the files.
