Wheel/Brake squeak.

Hey boys,

Read a few threads on here and other forums but not really seen an answer as to what to do, maybe there is nothing to do?

My 59 plate has just started squeaking, it sounds like a piece of chalk on a chalk board. It does this non stop during the duration of driving and also when the brakes are applied. It seems to be the front right wheel only.

The car has just been serviced (30 months) at Mill Hill Nissan and there was no comments from them about brake pads or anything of the like. The car is reaching 17k miles just about now.

The noise is highly annoying and ideally I'd like to get rid of the noise

I've been for a 'hard' drive and broke from 120MPH to 0mph multiple times however the noise still seems to be there.

Or is this just a case where the pads have had their day?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

A bit more info would help...

Are you on OEM pads/discs?

Are they from new, thus 17k old?

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and torque is how far you take the wall with you.

OEM pads and discs - yes. They are the originals too, so they've done the full 17k!

Just abit shocked that Nissan Mill Hill didn't say anything about them needing to be replaced if that's the most likely thing? Do you think they're most likely done for then?

Cheers!

Could be a number of things but probably worth getting the pads checked especially. 17k is a lot of miles for the OEM setup and you may have breakdown of the pad material/backing plate boundary.

Obviously a guess, but I'd have them checked over and get ready for buying some nice aftermarket pads/discs.

And that's another story....

Cheers mate. Is it likely to cause any damage driving round in its current state, for example to the discs?

I've never taken the car on a track - ready to purchase some new pads/discs if need be, oh the joy!

I'd be guessing worn pads down the backing plate or they have separated. Either could cause disc damage so would make it a priority or you might have to factor in £600 for some discs.

At 17k I'd imagine your discs will be fairly worn already.

A good idea is have a shufty at the discs themselves and look for uneven wear, gouging, etc.

Even have a look for signs of trapped stones which can often cause noises both when braking and off brake as well.

I've often had these sort of noises on previous cars and a strip down of the pads/discs usually shows up any issues.

I wouldnt worry particularly as long as braking performance isnt dropping off.

Thanks guys.

One last question - do you recommend that I goto a GT-R specialist such as Litchfields etc to have these changed or would a fairly decent 'local' garage suffice?

Litchfields just isn't too local for me and I'd like to avoid the big journey if possible. Based in Herts if that means anything.

Cheers

I've had my brakes changed 3 times by a trusted local garage with zero issues.

Nothing special about changing GTR brakes.

Litchfields....you don't want to buy OEM pads if required...would need to be a very very very well trusted local place before I would let them anywhere near the car. The pads are simple to take out and check though...not do it yourself??

I would do mate but I don't have the tools and I'm REALLY not the best when it comes to doing things with my hands - I sit at a computer for most of the day

I'll take the car to a trusted friend and see what they make of them.

Cheers Steve.

Glad to help.

Just thought I'd drop an update here incase anyone is in the same situation. I'm replacing the pads with Carbotech XP8s.

I'm in two minds about whether to replace the discs too or not. They currently have a 'lip' but a few friends have said filing this down would be okay and should last another set of pads.

Cheers.
