It doesn't need to rain to get a rainbow, You just need large enough droplets of water, which you have in that cloud formation. Looks cool though

LOL, Didn't think of that, however I can't get jealous as we appear to have clear skies and bright sunshine here

Unfortunately I won't see it from inside the workshop tomorrow, rush job on and I'm foreman, so no getting out of that one lol.

You can get complete circular rainbows around the sun, not touching the horizon anywhere, with bright secondary suns on either side on otherwise blue-sky or gently cloudy weather. If you look up through trees, you may only see part of the rainbow floating up there. As Marky says, tiny water droplets or ice crystals.

These fairly rare phenomena are called "sundog(s)" by some and "parhelion" by others. I have only seen them about three times. Once I had my camera with me and took some shots and then my mobile rang to say that my mother was critical and to come immediately.

I have never seen a Sundog... You must have been quite lucky to spot 3 of them. I was treated to the lenticular cloud display a few months back over leeds though, that was cool.

The easiest way to see a circular rainbow would be from the air I imagine as its only the interaction with the ground that stops all of them looking circular.

I've seen similar to that. It was 1996 in Hull, where I was at university. There was what can only be described as a pink-tinged flourescent cloudy streak stretching across the sky.

If you've ever seen Star Trek Generations and you remember the Nexus, it looked like that:

The press reported it and explained that it was down to a mixture of chemicals and dust in the upper atmosphere, flourescing and reflecting/refracting sunlight.

I just thought it was cool, it was the end of the world so went back to my halls of residence and got wasted
