New head unit / car stereo system?
So I have the non-satnav GTR which means I cant connect an mp3 player to the head unit. Obviously CDs are a bit of a dead format so Im just wondering what my options are.
Anyone installed a new head unit? Is it difficult? Any suggested brands and models?

They were trying to convince me to fit a double Din HU for the improved sound quality. I didn't catch which model.

FRIZZEL where are you based as I know a chap/company who has worked on R35's since they were grey imports with electrical and stereo stuff - highly recommended for London, the South and the South East.

If you replace the stereo how do you control the climate control? If you replace th screen how do you retain mfd function? I'm sure it sounds better but not at the expense of the driving xperience.

Because the stereo isn't in the screen or the climate control. The replacement sits in the bottom part where the Bose badge is. They posted a photo on FB, so will try and find it and post here.

The terrible sound quality is really killing the driving experience as enjoying good music with good quality speakers is as important as the actual drive for me. Im surprised that Nissan went to the hassle of installing an 11-speaker system but went with a sh*tty company like Bose. At this moment, Im just looking to replace the head unit. Will be looking at new speakers at a future date.

Frizzel - the speakers and amps would be the starting point.
Here's a HU they installed. Note that HU was used as test because they couldn't get a decent sound out of the Clarion unit (i've got a dual monitor set up with far more adjustment) and the guy who's car it was had the Alpine unit kicking about. Car running set of Focal KRx mids and tweets, Genesis amps, JL sub and good cabling. Proper car audio I've heard the car and it's very good. I'm tempted to change to another HU, plus i can take digital signal into my amp! ![]()

For improving sound quality, yes, I agree. From a budgetary point of view... not so much.
Im thinking that at the very least, if I replace the head unit I can at least improve the sound quality marginally and use an mp3 player instead of having to burn CDs. Speakers and amp will come at a later date. Hopefully. Thanks for posting the pic. Looks very clean. Ill give the guy in Glasgow a call and see if I can get a similar installation in London.
