They got ****ed after the war. About time they got some recognition. Love the tribute to Barnes wallis in the ceiling. Touching.

Thanks for posting the link. What a thankless task it must have seemed. Glad the RAF Benevolent Fund are going to look after it. Marvellous work they do.

Been reading (another) book about 617 squadron.just so brave and selfless. An absolute scandal that they were snubber after the war.
Anyone who argues Dresden etc was a step too far, look up the word "Coventrate" Mook

OK. What I meant was is it derived from Coventry...seems it is.
coventrate, v. (temporary.) To bomb intensively; to devastate sections of (a city) by concentrated bombing, such as that inflicted on Coventry, Warwickshire, in November 1940. So coventrating vbl. n.; coventration. 1940 Hutchinson's Pict. Hist. War 2 Oct.-26 Nov. 221 German bombers made prolonged mass attacks..on Coventry... And..they invented the verb 'to coventrate' to describe the indiscriminate mass murder of civilians. 1940 They were brave blokes there's no doubt about it.

Apparently somewhere in Betty's Bar in York, Bomber Command etched their names into the mirrors with the barmaid's engagement ring. Was on a documentary just now.

In a war between two modern industrialised nations there is no such thing as a civilian because they are working in factories to build bombs to drop on you and planes to drop them. Factories can be rebuilt, the workers cannot, hence the philosophy of saturation bombing.
