Question Strange Gearing sound...

Greetings,

I test drove a 2012 GT-R 3weeks ago and was fixed on getting hold of one. Whilst driving the car I noticed that it made the strange mechnical sounds every so often, I was told by the rep some years ago this used to be louder and improved software for ECU and Gearbox has helped tremendously. I have now purchased a 2009 GT-R love it to bits, and this has had latest software updates, recently Nissan Serviced. However when I showed of the car to a friend of mine who is a mechanic he noted this occasional gearing sound. As part of me getting Warranty outside of Nissan after 6months, Warranty Direct noted that it made a strange gearing noise, very slightly but the Dealer explained to him that this a common noise on all GT-R's, to that effect took that of his report, and passed the inspection. How true is it that Gearbox software does make a difference and having a propshaft, dual clutch will produce mechanical type sounds ?.

Best regards,

SpiceyKam

It common for the geraboxes to make worrying noises, but you get used to it. When the salesman trots out the "they all do that sir" line, he's actually right in this case. Exacerabted by the lack of sound deadening between carpets and floorpan.

hahaha, thanks mick I suppose that's why they've got the Bose systems to drown out those occasional worrying noises.

Don't use the BOSE. Use a y-pipe and preferably downpipes. The noise won't be a problem then.

It is worrying sometimes but they all do it. I suppose a rally car doesn't sound like its roadgoing brother but then if you want to be able to handle 650bhp and 600ftlb of torque with 200ms gearshifts in essentially a manual gearbox then its bound to be a bit noisy. Rather have noise than an Auto

It is worth pointing out that yes, "they all do it" but of course if the noise increases over time then it could be a problem. After 2 years and luckily just before the warranty expires I noticed that the noises had gotten louder and Nissan replaced the bell housing under warranty. So what I mean is that noises are largely OK but if they change then it should be looked at imho.

Yes getting some Y-Pipes fitted on Saturday, and far additional tuning can't really will invalidate the warranty, hope the Y-Pipe will drown out the occassional clunky sound.

Excuse me for my ignorance, gearbox upgrade at Litchfields for £300, what is this surely software ?. Why would you upgrade, is the current factory ones unreliable or not up to the job ?.

Software upgrade only.

Dont worry about the noises, i would be more concerned if it didn't make any at all.

Welcome aboard btw.

upgrade smooths out changes as at low speeds there was an upgrade on my11 cars also gives you adjustable launch control.
