For me, the observing of the fast is just one facet of Ramadan. Almost a week into Ramadan and the 17-18 hour fasts are proving quite testing given the nice weather we seem to have been enjoying of late.

The fast provides a first hand insight into the struggles of others who are not as fortunate as us to have food and drink on tap. The endeavour to better ourselves as individuals is also extremely important. Being more mindful and affording others respect is something we should take from this month and try and instill as part of our daily routine all year round..

Respect for giving it a go Marky and yes, they are some of he benefits.

BBC Two - Horizon, 2012-2013, Eat, Fast and Live Longer

Micheal Mosley tries a 5 day eat 5 day fast and cannot believe the positive results. Stop being a woos and do the whole 30 days! Lol

Muslims have been doing this for the past 1400+ years, not bad for a 'backward people' lol

My dad, 89yo mashallah, has certain health conditions that l won't go into, still insists on keeping his fasts..... Nuff said.

P.s. keep strong Akhi's !

I saw the Horizon thing, fascinating. But I thought Ramadan was not fasting in the same way as the programme was saying as it is from dawn until dusk, but you then eat whatever you want? On Horizon the fasting was basically 5 days normal eating then 2 days fasting solid (under 600 calories per day).

Big thumbs up for sure to Marky for fasting..

And mashallah, Uncle-jee is doing good in observing his fasts despite not being in 100% health. At ELM; we are very lucky to have Shaikh Ahmed Amir flown over from Egypt to lead the Tarawih prayers. Very powerful voice and he too is probably in his early 90s.. Really inspiring..

May all of our fasts and supplications be accepted..

p.s. Toni - we fast from sunrise to sunset; so tomorrow for instance, in London, we will be fasting from around 3.51am to 8.38pm..

I have been interested in the whole "Restricted" diet for a long time, Its been proven to stretch the life of various test animals but no proof in humans so far (As far as I am aware anyway)

I have, as of Friday last week I switched to a "every other day" style fast method. So one day I allow myself a basic, very small meal (Few hundred calories), then next day I can eat normally (Though still in the limits of the diet required for meniers) Will see how it goes

Doing Ramadan was quite a challenge when one isn't used to such things, It requires concentration at times as one can sometimes find themselves automatically reaching for a crisp or something... It also disrupts patterns of behaviour that have been formed over many years. To anyone who hasn't done it I would encourage you to try at least once. It will open your eyes just a little bit further

Even though there are a good few hours the time the sunsets and the time that the sunrises, I personally find that there isn't much time to eat at all once your factor in time for prayers and rest..

Oh and here is a picture I took earlier having stumbled upon an old timetable I have stored away..

"Sehri ends" is when the fast begins..

"Iftar Time" is when the fast draws to a close for the day..

I see!

Well I sympathise with you guys, I've had to be on liquids only for 11 weeks due to stomach problems so I know it is tough.

Much better already thanks.

But I learned how much eating is to do with hunger, and how much is just picking through boredom or whatever, so it did me good.

Good luck on your month of fasting chaps.

This year iv been at work late most of the fast opening times and luckily had time to rest and save my energy during the day.

I fast during daylight hours every October for the last ten or so years.
First started as a few of us decided to join some of our Muslim friends who were telling us how hard it was.
We did it, funnily enough, though it was difficult I missed coffee. More through habit than necessity.
Following year, I did it again. Then, my mother passed and having lost my father many years earlier, I chose October as my fasting month where I would detox and use as a time of contemplation.
I have to allow myself water during the day though as I am not good with headaches.
