New World Speed Record

According to Feb's issue of Porker World a 9ff modified 996-model 911 GT2 car has taken the world record speed for street legal cars from the McL F1 with a speed of 388Km/h (242.5mph) recorded at Nardo.

The owner (and 9ff Tuner) Fatthauer (don't laugh, its his real name) reckons that the 826hp car is good enough for 250mph if he can find a long enough straight - Nardo is too short he claimed.

I think the Porker might need a fair bit of work on the aero-d to manage 250mph, unless its downhill with a good tailwind!

Its funny as I believe the 900kg 880bhp Cerbera speed 12 should really hold this title but there you go.

The 9ff is stunning, I read about the run in this months EVO and its such an achievment. Very talented bloke, must have a few euros to to make that thing.

Ant.

Have a look at a picture of the engine - cheap and nasty blow-off valves held on with jubilee clips...

I agree but who in their right mind would take a Cerbera (pretty much shopping trolley with fibreglass panels!) to that kind of speed! You'd need one hell of a safety cell.

Yeah you would need a crash test dummy driving! I think the speed 12 has carbon fibre panels anyway, so its more a shopping trolley with an insane engine and a coating of carbon fibre.

Give them credit Phil, thats all for extra lightness rather than welding them on

Ok, so how fast would a tuned Mcl F1 go?

Insanely fast BUT it wouldnt be a 'standard production car' then which according to bizarre German law the 9ff actually is

I can't believe no-one who read the Evo article has mentioned this. With the 9ff they had to remove the rear wind, cut the front splitter in half, tape over all the panel gaps and then remove both the windscreen wipers and the wing mirrors as they hit 'a brick wall' at 238Mph. If someone did all that crap to a Mc F1 then I bet it would do 250mph as well In road trim it couldn't beat 238 so in my opinion the MacLaren is STILL the fastest road car on earth

Twinturboch,

I read it in EVO but didn't think it warrented a mention.
I know it is the 'road legal' speed record, but its hardly fare!
The F1 was a production car out of the box and managed
240.1mph, and the only mod it has was a removed rev limiter.
The car is in a class of its own.

The record has stood for over 11 years now with no one getting
even close, I only hope another over powered single minded car
breaks it asap. (Fuggles?..... )

Ant,

I don't think Peter Wheelr could find a big enough idiot to drive the
Speed 12. He pulled the thing himself when he realised what a monster
he had created.

The Macca is still No.1 to me.

The F1 engine is basically 2 BMW M3 engines in a v12(6064cc) at 600hp(GTR) and 627(GT). Im sure you can squeeze more out of it. It's also aerodymanically based on the calibra(most aerodynamic prodction car ever built@.28cd). That make my R32 @ .4cd look like a brick.

More power available - yes, at least one McLaren F1 road-car has had an official upgrade in power to 725bhp at the factory (it costs a six figure sum). However the tires and suspension are now out-dated and need upgrading to more modern designs. McLaren won't upgrade either so one owner I know is having custom suspension made (it's actually quite soft on the road). The tires in particular are very high profile by todays designs (they run 45 profile on 17s at the rear, when today even my wifes BMW runs 30 profiles on 19s)

As for the 9FF car, I have seen it in person and whilst it is fast, it requires a rebuild every 12,000 miles and is certainly not a production car, but a highly tuned peaky and unproven engine based within a production car and not a patch on the legendary F1 (and I speak as a modified GT2 owner!)

As for the F1 being based on a Calibra - that's the silliest thing I've read in ages. The cD for an F1 is actually 0.31 to 0.32, however it is helped by having a very small frontal area of 1.79m2.

Petey,

I thought about that when reading the EVO article,
but forgot to mention it in my post.

I remember reading about it in 'World Sports Car' in
the late 80's. It was a fantastic mag with road test
of many modified exotica. I particually remember the
Koenig Testarossa Evolution with 1000bhp.
I think I have every issue.
