Thanks Henry. I see you've jumped off teh M4CP ship!

My missus's arrives in a few days (apparently..), but I'm surprised you're rid so quick.

Any particular reason?

super thread and looking forward to seeing the outcome

how many miles now mate ? I was thinking if you have been running 640hp and 600lb/ft for 40 or so thousand miles that might explain it...

I am planning on the same kind of power, but going to keep the miles down to try and preserve it..
how "hard" do you drive it ?

Thanks Nick, much appreciated.

There's almost 70k on the old girl now. I was Stage 1 Cobb from 07/2009 to Feb 2010 then stage 3 til 06/2012 then stage 4 from then on. Probably right, around 40k on Stage 4.

I use my car as it was intended, and with plenty of track days in the early days too. Not much track action since early 2013 when my daughter was born.

I was really bored of it...it's very capable but the engine is very dull...bought a 535d instead which I totally adore.

The CP is too refined to be fun...basically got close to what I paid back and got 32% off the 535d.

Ticked a box owning one but just never fell for it...I respect it but never loved it

GTR or 911 are much more me...though might get an E92 m3 as a track car as the engine better and look good value

If had been an m3 I may have kept longer...we found ourselves using missus 1 series at weekends and the m4 sat at home only being used during week to go to station...now 1 series stays at home at weekend...535d has the HUD like the m4 and can go at a fair old lick and chassis is less twitchy and more progressive as it breaks traction

^ agreed on that. I have M435d, X-drive, loaded up with M stuff and re-mapped to 360hp.
its is sooooo much nicer than the same model M3 to drive as a daily.
Its just about, as near as dammit, as quick, thanks to 700nm of torque. but its in the wet the car really shines. the M3 was bloody dangerous ! lol

A little update.

Block was shipped to Litchfields to have the bores honed for their own pistons and rods combo. Hopefully we will have the block back this week then the fun bit of rebuilding can begin.

Cannot.

Wait.

Nope Terry.

After some discussions with a few folks I opted for Litchos rod/piston combo for several reasons.

It's not that a CP/Carillo combo is in any way bad, just that what Iain at Litchfield has done with the pistons especially is very neat indeed and made up for the increased cost. I also had Litch hone the bores for me as they use a technique that ensures the bore/piston fit is much more precise once the head is fitted.

That combination of factors swayed me towards using Litchos kit/expertise.

Interesting - do you know what they use i know he stocks manley rods not sure about pistons capricorn ? - i know they bolt a thick plate to the block while boring to simulate the head being torqued up - finally tell them to hurry up as im waiting for the results

I know the rods are made by Arrow and I think the pistons are Capricorn.

They keep the stock oil squirters as well as having some other trick design elements that are only found on Litchos pistons.

More expensive than off the shelf but worth it for me.

Block will be back with Paul at Riverside Racing on Monday.

Opted for ARP main studs but OEM head bolts.

Also thanks for taking an interest Terry. The wait is killing me like you wouldn't believe!

Are you considering a similar project?

I am not sure what to do - i am rebuilding my kit car over winter it has a 300hp turbo charged motorbike engine in it , on track days its epic due to the weight and its cheap to run - i can replace the engine for @ £500 brake pads £50 etc - when its done i will make my mind up which car to keep - if i sell the kit car i will spend the money on the GTR - if i go that way i will have a £10k budget - i will do the rods not pistons as i can do this without any machining , i will go for the HKS GT800 kit - my thoughts are it comes with downpipes and inlets roller bearing turbos not much difference in price to buying good stock manifold turbos and plus the other bits mentioned

The fact you're even thinking about ditching the shopping trolley and upping the R35 says it all!

I wonder how well the HKS performs without their related camshaft upgrade? Given how camshafts and turbos need to be matched to get the best out of both.

HKS kit is very complete which is why some tuners like it - everything is supplied.

Block has returned from its travels to Litchos, all honed and ready to be rebuilt.

Decided today to buy one of Litchos Quaife front diffs as it seems sensible to do now whilst the engine is out. That'll be with my pal Paul this week so hopefully we will be rebuilding the engine next week. Paul has succumbed to man flu this week and is having his engine building room redone so will start on the rebuild next week all being well.

When I was out in Goldie's car, the front diff was very noticeable and a very nice improvement. Good choice.
