lots of Aussie GTR's are using REDLINE lightweight shockproof - including me good stuff, and something I will continue to use.

I suggest you also use a suction pump to get the oil in - much easier.....

Mate I am just another GT-R owner that luckily found the REDLINE stuff before wasting money on a gearbox rebuild!!!!

if you are interested there is plenty of good info in the Aussie http://www.skylinesaustralia.com site on redline....

is expensive as! (about 50 pounds here) but worth it!!!

Question Someone help please!!

I wanted to know whether a R34 GTR getrag gearbox would fit into a R33GTR chassis. Reason for this question is because i have a R33 GTR with an R34 N1 engine.. Also if anyone might have prices on it..

Thanks Ali

I think it does, there are R32s in japan with R34 boxes so no reason not to fit, conversion cost, no idea but guessing an R34 box alone would be worth a couple of k.

As for reliability, do a search, lots have been written & i think the consensus is that the 6speed is no stronger than the 5, I use to have an r33 (0.8bar chip)which started to baulk between 4 & 5 at approx 50000 motorway miles & driven in a restrained fashion.

I'll stick with 5 & factor in gearbox rebuild as a wear & tear part.

any ideas on what would be the best rebuild for a 600bhp r33 gtr, reliability wise obviously a standard gearbox has always had a weak link issue on gears 3rd & 4th.
also if you may have any price ideas, would help.

Thanks Ali

I seemed to remember Abbey M/S talking about rebuilding the 5 speed with uprated Nissan? parts, as for prices, don't know for sure but think it could be around a £1000+ mark, best to phone a few reputable places & get prices, update on the 6 speed is the box is around £2-3000 + fitting & u'll need a new propshaft? as the gearbox is slightly longer than the 5 speed.

At some point, towards the end of R33 GTR production, Nissan uprated 4th / 5th gear assembly including syncro rings.

Any rebuild of the std box should now include these more robust parts, as original parts are no longer available.

The synco rings are apparently stronger as is 4th&5th assembly. Rebuild cost from specialist circa £1800........

What advantages would the 6sp give over the 5sp, does it make the car quicker?

Thumbs up I don't believe it!!!!

Richard bell put in the new Redline Heavy Shockproof oil in the gearbox for me when he put the engine back in. Before then the gear change from 4th to 5th was crunching really badly, even when pausing in neutral for half a second. There was just an awefull sounding crrrunnnch

Now it's perfect, even on fast changes and the box is super slick from cold. Two or three people advised me to try the Shockproof oil, but I was scepticle. I mean, how can just a different oil help a weak synchro ring?

Go on, try it - dam sight cheaper than a gearbox rebuild

Me too the odd time but over the years of driving all sorts of cars nearly every gearbox has it's problems.
