The Getrag 6 is definitely not more reliable than the 5 in the 33. I was going to do the conversion myself (which includes a change of three propshafts, two going aft and one forward), until another 33 which did the same conversion had a problem with his gearbox. Turns out the box synchros had an early retirement, apparently...

When I biult my new engine I fitted a low k gtr box at the same time , filled it with redline lightweight gear oil ....after a season of drag racing it now is impossible to put into 4th without crunching it....

4th to 5th and back to 4th

Mine, GTR32, crunches both ways, 4th to 5th and also 5th to 4th, unless you're super gentle and let the box slowdown between changes.........sometimes that means a second!!!........no probs from 3rd to 4th like a few are experiencing. After reading here I'm gonna go for the heavy shockproof gearoil and see if it makes any difference..........worth a try before considering a rebuild I guess.

Here goes nothing!!!

Well the Heavy Shockproof worked for mine and 4,000 miles later on it is still perfect

3rd to 4th crunches if and only if I've come from 8000rpm in 3rd and do a quickish change. Otherwise all is fine. I voted for "Stock box was fine but now causing some concern whilst changing..".

Heel and toeing is something completely different!!!
I still use double declutching every day, admittedly it is a technique from the days of crash gearboxes, still useful though!!!
I'm changing my gearbox oil tomorrow, see if it smoothes it out a bit, used to be ok till I fitted a twin plate clutch!!!

Another two words

I do!!!

And some more...............

after you've driven a 560bhp cobra with an antique muncie box with no synchro you kinda get into that habit of always double declutch-ing......so the GTR box seems sweet compared to that monster.

Anyways, I did the Redline Heavyshock proof thing and hey presto!!.........sweet as!!!

Hopefully it'll last for a while so I can learn to DOUBLE DECLUTCH!!!!!! before I rebuild it.

Thanks for the advice guys (that's about the oil not the driving!)

[little dragon], mans got a point, 53k 406bhp lots of track days , quarter mile sprints, 33gtr and double de-clutch up and down the box, a little rev when gearing down, no probs with my box at all.

has it made it any better? Before, if you were gentle and at lower revs - would it always crunch?

it takes a few mins to warm up, once it is, the gears are a lot smoother if gentle, just not when givin' it large...
