You lot werent lying!!!!!!!!!! Inlet manifold gasket!!

Well.....

It has took me all of this afternoon to change my 32gtr inlet manifold gasket.
The workshop manual was a great help but missed out a few important points...

I did however take about 100 pictures as i went along so hopefully if anyone else is tackling this in the future a lot of it will make more sense.

I think the biggest help has been from here, whoever has mentioned using a telescopic magnet.. THANK YOU!

As i was putting it back together i remembered that a lot of you had lost a few nuts n bolts in the process and i was proud that i had only mislaid one plenum nut.... Lo and behold wallowing in my own glory didnt last much longer i lost 4 nuts in the space of about 5 mins PMSL.

1/4 drive socket set is definately the key to success, 3/8 just isnt small enough for most of the inlet nuts.

Ratchet spanners have prob saved me an hour or so.

Problematic areas...

The clutch/brake servo hard pipes are bolted to the inlet just under cylinder 5, perserverance (sp) with a 1/4 drive ratchet and 10mm socket will get this undone, removal of the throttle cable adjustment bracket helps the plenum come off, I unbolted the fuse box which gave me some more access area and vision.
Lay a sheet under the car to catch nuts n bolts etc.

I'll get some of the pics posted up later.

Rob

Cams are a peice of **** compared to the plenum Rob, gapping them can be laborious but not in the same league as the plenum, well done. Nice to meet you at GTB btw.

any plans to create a 'how to guide'?

would be very useful - especially if you have loads of pics.

Yes mate, luckily i have twice as much knowlege now

I left filling the coolant until today as i was tired, whilst topping up i could hear water trickling from somewhere...

I had left the bloody coolant pipe off that fits onto the manifold itself (at the back).
What a dick head! So people, when you remove the coolant pipe from the manifold.... lol

Took me about 2.5 hours to do it today, but once you have done it once you can work out how to undo each bolt the easy way/pipes etc etc.

Hi Peter, was good to meet you and put a face to a name i was working right next to where your car was parked at the start but couldnt see anyone about.

Out of interest (not even looked yet) does the skyline run top hat shims? i assume by gapping you mean using different thickness shims?

Time to get the workshop manual out me thinks.

One thing that did make life easier on refitting both times was the servo pipe moving.
I unclipped the rubber servo hose with the one way valve in it, bent the pipe from the ACV so that it would run under the plenum rather than inbetween cylinder 5/6 and it made life so much easier on refitting.

Just plain shims Rob. I found gapping them really frustrating, took the stock cams out of the new engine, put the Poncams in, measured the gaps then measured the shims to work out correct thickness shims, put new ones in, rotated the engine, checked the new gaps and found some had to be done again... not sure if that's the correct way to do it.

Yup sounds right to me, out of interest where did you get your new shims from?

Ive needed an excuse to buy a new set of vernier gauges for a while now.

New timing belt en route, just gotta pick up some cam seals.

I know it is reccomended to replace the idlers and tensioners when doing the belt but mine was only changed 5k miles ago... what to do what to do... (unsure if they were changed).

I would usually reuse the belt at such low milage but i need a bling Blue one
